In a hard fought battle, the men's basketball team held on for a 60-57 win over Medgar Evers College on Wednesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds extend their win streak to seven and improve to 18-5 overall and 10-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. John Jay is now an impressive 10-1 at the Doghouse. The Cougars fall to 6-17 overall and 3-9 in CUNYAC.
After recording his 1,000th career-point in early December, senior
Doug Levy made history on Wednesday after picking up his 1,000th career rebound to become the first player in program history to accomplish both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. The forward finished the night with a season-high and game-high 17 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Senior
Jayson Brower notched his eighth double-double of the year with 14 points, a season-high 13 rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Junior
Kyle LaGuardia also registered a double-double, his fifth of the season, with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and a game-high five assists. Junior
Romello Ford and sophomore
Angel Rivera combined for 11 points and five rebounds. Freshman
Garrison Watkins came off the bench to pour in nine points. Freshman
Corey Jones Jr. added a career-high three assists.
With the Bloodhounds trailing 10-6 in the first, Levy and Ford made two straight layups to even the score. With 9:00 left in the half, Brower sank a three-pointer from the corner to give John Jay their first lead of the game. Rivera followed by converting on a three-point play and Brower then sank another three-pointer to put the Bloodhounds ahead by nine.
The visitors cut the deficit to four but John Jay ended the half on a 12-2 run to head into halftime with a 37-23 advantage.
Seven minutes into the second, the Bloodhounds led 49-35. With less than eight minutes left to go, the Cougars trimmed the lead down to three. LaGuardia answered with a layup to increase the lead back up to five with 4:22 on the clock.
Trailing by five, Medgar Evers scored three straight points to trail 59-57 with 1:48 remaining. A free-throw by Levy with three seconds put John Jay ahead by three. The Cougars put up a last second three-pointer but Levy was able to get a hand on it for the block as time expired.
John Jay went 22-for-71 (31.0%) from the field, 5-for-21 (23.8%) from behind the arc, and 11-for-18 (61.1%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds host Brooklyn College on Saturday, February 15, at 3:00 pm at the Doghouse. Before the game, the Athletics Department will honor seniors
