After dropping the first set, the men's volleyball team bounced back to defeat CCNY, 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-20), on Thursday night at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Upper Manhattan. The Bloodhounds improve to 4-10 on the season. The Beavers drop to 4-10.
Senior
Krystian Surdel led the way with his first double-double of the season with a season-high and match-high 17 kills, a season-high 10 digs, a season-high four total blocks, and a pair of aces. Sophomore
Doobin Lee fell two kills shy of a double-double with eight kills, a career-high 10 digs, and two total blocks. Sophomore
Alejandro Gallardo notched 13 kills and seven digs.
Senior
Godwin Sequeira picked up a team-high 14 digs and five assists. Freshman
Jack Nugent recorded nine kills and a career-high and match-high eight total blocks. Junior
Dylan Senkiw dished out a game-high 36 assists to go along with eight digs, three kills, and three total blocks.
The first set went back-and-forth as there were nine lead changes in the first 19 points. With the Bloodhounds trailing 16-10, John Jay registered four straight points to cut the deficit to four. CCNY took the first set after ending the period on a 4-1 run. The Bloodhounds tallied seven of the first 10 points in the second set. Down 11-6, the hosts went on a 5-0 run to even the score. John Jay followed on a 14-5 run to tie the match at one apiece.
Just like the first set, both teams exchanged points in the third as the match was tied 10-10. The Bloodhounds then went on two separate 4-0 runs as they won the set and took a 2-1 lead. John Jay opened the fourth on a 6-4 run. Up 8-7, the Bloodhounds recorded nine of the next 12 points to go up by seven. The Beavers made a late comeback but the Bloodhounds held on for the non-conference victory.
John Jay finished the night with 50 kills, 46 assists, 22 total blocks, four service aces, and 49 digs.
The Bloodhounds travel to Brooklyn on Saturday, March 7, for a CUNYAC tri-match. John Jay takes on Hunter College at 10:00 am followed by Brooklyn College at 12:00 pm.
