The top seeded men's basketball team was upset by #5 Brooklyn College, 57-55 in overtime, in the CUNYAC semifinals on Tuesday night in front of a packed and loud Doghouse. The Bloodhounds fall to 20-6 on the season.
Senior
Jayson Brower led the John Jay offense with a double-double with a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman
Garrison Watkins came off the bench to pick up 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior
Doug Levy grabbed a game-high 13 boards to go along with a season-high and game-high six blocks and four assists.
Junior
Kyle LaGuardia finished with eight points, five boards, and a career-high five blocks. Sophomore
Angel Rivera tallied eight points, four rebounds, and a team-high two steals. Junior
Romello Ford added four assists.
The Bloodhounds took a 31-22 lead at the half. Brooklyn opened the second period on an 8-0 run to trail by one. With 10:14 left in regulation, the Bulldogs took their first lead 39-38. With John Jay leading 48-43, the visitors ended the half on a 6-1 run to even the score and send the game to overtime.
The play went back-and-forth in OT as the score was even 53-53. Down by three with 37 seconds on the clock, Levy made a jumper to cut the deficit to one. With nine seconds left, Brooklyn made a free-throw to go up by two.
With 0.3 remaining, LaGuardia put up a tough layup but the ball rattled off the rim as Brooklyn went on to complete the upset.
John Jay finished 20-for-61 (32.8%) from the field, 6-for-24 (25.0%) from behind the arc, and 9-for-15 (60.0%) from the free-throw line.
The Bulldogs will now face No. 2 Baruch in the CUNYAC Title on Friday, February 28, at York College.
The Bloodhounds will await to see if they qualify for the ECAC postseason tournament.
