Doug Levy's 13th Double-Double Lifts Men's Basketball to Sixth Straight Victory; Bloodhounds Secure Top Two Seed in CUNYAC Postseason Tournament

The men's basketball team recorded another double-digit victory and their sixth-in-a-row after cruising to a 82-71 win against York College on Friday night in Jamaica, NY. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 17-5 on the season and 10-1 in conference play. John Jay has now secured a top two seed and will receive a first-round bye in the upcoming CUNYAC postseason tournament. The Cardinals drop to 7-15 overall and 3-8 in CUNYAC.

Senior Doug Levy led the offense with his team-leading 13th double-double of the season with a team-high 20 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, two blocks, and a pair of assists. The Smithtown, NY native also went 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. Senior Jayson Brower fell three rebounds shy of a double-double with 15 points, seven boards, and four assists. Freshman Garrison Watkins came off the bench to register a career-high 13 points and five rebounds.

Sophomore Angel Rivera finished with 13 points and a pair of assists. Junior Romello Ford tallied seven points, a team-high six assists, and five rebounds. Junior Kyle LaGuardia added 11 points, four boards, four assists, a game-high three blocks, and a team-high three steals.

The Bloodhounds jumped out to an early 8-2 lead as Brower and Rivera drained three-pointers. With 13:22 remaining in the half, the Cardinals cut the deficit to 12-11. Down by three, the hosts went on a 7-0 run to go up 20-16.

John Jay went to work as Brower sank a three to trim the lead down to one. Freshman Corey Jones Jr. came off the bench to swish a three to even the score at 24 apiece with 6:47 on the clock. That would ignite a 9-0 run as the Bloodhounds regained the lead. Levy nailed a three-pointer at the end of the period to give John Jay a 37-28 advantage after 20 minutes.

A layup by Rivera two minutes in increased the advantage to 13. The Cardinals cut the deficit to seven but Watkins responded with a layup. Leading 49-42, the Bloodhounds broke open the game on an 11-0 run and would cruise to their ninth victory in last 10 contests.

John Jay finished 26-for-66 (39.4%) from the floor, 7-for-27 (25.9%) from behind the arc, and 23-for-34 (67.6%) from the free-throw line.

The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse to host Medgar Evers on Wednesday, February 12, at 8:00 pm.
