BROOKLYN, NY -- The men's basketball team held on to a late lead to earn their first victory of the 2021-22 season over Pratt Institute, 60-52, on Sunday afternoon. It was the Bloodhounds' first win in 635 days. John Jay improves to 1-3 while the Cannoneers drop to 0-3 overall.
Sophomore
Dan Kenny picked up his first collegiate double-double with a game-high and career-high 13 rebounds, 10 points, and a team-high two blocks. Sophomore
Garrison Watkins finished with 13 points, a season-high seven rebounds, and tying a career-high with seven assists. Freshman
Bleron Lata added 13 points. Juniors
Angel Rivera tallied eight points and
Joel-Anthony Alleyne had six points and six rebounds.
The first nine minutes went back-and-forth as the game was tied at 15-15. With Pratt leading 20-19, the Bloodhounds went on a 9-0 run courtesy of five points by Lata. John Jay went into the half holding a 31-23 advantage.
Approximately six minutes into the second period, the Cannoneers stormed back to even the score at 35 apiece. Pratt would then hold a five-point lead but two free-throws by Lata, a jumper by Watkins, and a free-throw by Kenny tied the game with 8:42 remaining in regulation.
Both teams exchanged baskets in the next five minutes as there were five lead changes. With the score 54-52 in favor of the Bloodhounds, John Jay ended the game on a 6-0 run to collect their first victory of the early season.
The Bloodhounds travel to Maritime College on Wednesday, November 17, for a non-conference tilt at 7:00 pm.
