THROGGS NECK, NY - The women's volleyball team came out swinging in their first match in nearly two years defeating Maritime College, 3-0 (25-13 25-17, 25-12), on Tuesday evening.
Freshman
Amanda Marte led the Bloodhounds with a team-high eight kills and four digs. Freshman
Faith Harer tallied six kills and six digs. Freshman
Taylor Hunt finished one ace and three digs shy of a double-double with a match-high nine service aces and a team-high seven digs. Freshman
Meghan Smith tallied a game-high 25 assists and freshmen
Reilly Catan and
Paige Sadowitz notched six kills each.
Maritime took an early 5-1 lead in the first set but John Jay evened the score at six apiece. Holding a 14-12 advantage, the Bloodhounds ended the set on an 11-1 run to take the opening set. The second set went back-and-forth as the score was tied at 7-7. John Jay then went on a 5-1 run and finished the set recording four of the final five points to go up 2-0. The Bloodhounds stormed out in the third taking a 9-2 lead. John Jay broke open the set on a 5-0 run to complete the sweep in the season opener.
John Jay finished with 34 kills, 31 assists, 19 service aces, and 27 digs.
The Bloodhounds travel to Dallas, PA on Saturday, September 11, for their first tri-match of the season. John Jay faces Misericordia University at noon followed by Wells College at 2:00 pm.
