Women's Volleyball Drops Two Games on Saturday To Potsdam and Clarkson

Meghan Smith and Reilly Catan post double-doubles

POTSDAM, NY- The John Jay women's volleyball team traveled upstate through the rainy weather to St. Lawrence County for a pair of matches against SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon. The Bloodhounds were swept (25-15, 25-15, 25-19) by the Golden Knights earlier in the day, and went on to lose a five-set thriller (25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 20-14) to the Bears later on in the afternoon. John Jay falls to 6-6 overall on the season, remaining 1-0 in CUNYAC play.

Despite the loss in game one, there were some solid individual performances. Sophomore setter Meghan Smith notched her fourth double-double of the season, totaling 19 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Faith Harer smashed a team-high nine kills, while sophomore Kristin Gretener collected a team-high 11 digs. Sophomore Rylea Sandel chipped in eight kills.

In the second match of the day, it looked like John Jay was going to be swept again after falling behind 2-0. Sophomore Reilly Catan helped jumpstart the Bloodhound offense with a couple kills to begin the third set, which seemed to rejuvenate the team. The Bloodhounds battled to a 25-23 win in the set, and rode that momentum into set four. They would tie up the match and send it to a fifth set, but ultimately the Bears would come out victorious.

Catan tallied her first double-double of the year with 12 kills and 10 digs. Smith had her second double-double of the day with 34 assists and 18 digs. Sophomore Taylor Hunt had 20 digs.

The Bloodhounds return home for their second CUNYAC contest of the season on Tuesday, October 4 against Medgar Evers. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Doghouse.
