Women's Volleyball Earns 3-1 Road Win At SUNY Maritime On Tuesday Evening

Throggs Neck, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball picked up its ninth win of the season, defeating SUNY Maritime, 3-1 (25-13; 25-20; 23-25; 25-22) on Tuesday evening. 
 
With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 9-8 overall while the Privateers falter to 2-9 on the season. Tonight's victory also marked John Jay's seventh straight win over SUNY Maritime while moving to 14-1 all-time against the Bronx-based program. 
 

Faith Harer and Johnelle Pierre paced the offense with eight kills apiece with Pierre also adding five digs in the victory. Harer and Meghan Smith each produced four aces with Smith tallying a team-leading 23 assists. Kristin Gretener led the way with 11 digs on the evening while Reilly Catan chipped in nine. Smith and Rylea Sandel finished with seven digs each.  

Celyna Custodio had a team-leading nine kills while Brooke Kirchner recorded 21 assists. Erica Pagano (18), Carolina Bersani (13), and Victoria Cordero (12) each reached double-figures in digs, led by Pagano. Kirchner and Pagano had four services aces to lead SUNY Maritime.

Maritime held a 3-1 lead before the Bloodhounds recorded an 11-3 run to take a 12-6 lead. Maritime trimmed the deficit down to four, 16-12, following an attack error by Paige Sadowitz.  John Jay closed out the first set on a 9-1 run, capped by a Sandel kill as the Bloodhounds went ahead 1-0. 
 

In the second set, the Bloodhounds faced a six-point deficit, 8-2, after Pagano recorded an ace. With a 10-7 lead by the Privateers, the Bloodhounds staged a rally, a 9-1 outburst, in taking a 16-11 edge. The home team clawed back in the match, trimming the John Jay lead down to two, 19-17, before the visitors held on for a 25-20 win after a successful kill by Sandel. 
 

The two teams traded points in the early portion of the third set before Maritime went up 8-6 on an attack error by Harer. The theme carried over to the later stages of the set, but, the Privateers were able to hang on for the 25-23 set win and getting on the scoreboard. 

In the fourth set, John Jay raced out to a 7-3 lead after a kill by Sadowitz. Maritime went on 6-0 run in taking a 9-7 lead after a kill by Custodio. Down 15-13, John Jay evened the set at 15 thanks to an ace by Harer.  A quick 5-1 run built a 20-16 lead in favor of the Bloodhounds, but was answered by a 4-0 burst that saw the lead shrink to one, 22-21. A service ace by Sadowitz sailed John Jay's ninth win of the season and gave the team their second straight win. 

The Bloodhounds will look to make it three in a row on Thursday evening as John Jay welcomes York College to The Doghouse at 7:00 p.m. for a CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match.
