Women's Volleyball Bounces Back Nicely with Dominant Sweep of York College on Thursday Night

JAMAICA, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team bounced back from a tough loss a couple of days ago to earn a dominant sweep (25-9, 25-7, 25-12) of the York College Cardinals on the road Thursday evening. With the win, John Jay improves to 12-9 on the season while the Cardinals drop to 0-16 on the year.

York scored the first point of the match, but John Jay responded with a 6-0 run sparked by a kill from sophomore Aniko Ouwendijk to take control of set one. The Cardinals slowly fought back and eventually cut the deficit to just one. With the Bloodhounds leading 10-9, they would go on to score 15 points in a row to close out the set, capped nicely by a pretty kill by sophomore Paige Sadowitz.

The Cardinals once again scored the first point of set two, but that would be the last lead they held for the entire match. The Bloodhounds defense was stout all match, and held the York offense to just 18 combined points from that point through the final two sets. Sophomore Rylea Sandel put the finishing touches on the match with a monster kill from the right side to give the Bloodhounds a 3-0 victory.

Sandel was dominant, collecting a match-high eight kills to go with three digs and two service aces. Senior Catharine Fleming had a career-night, tallying a career-high six kills as well as a career-high seven digs, along with a career-high two service aces. Sadowitz chipped in seven kills and three digs. Freshman Saeryn O'Bleness collected a career-high (and match-high) 16 assists. Sophomore Kristin Gretener had four service aces and nine digs to lead the team.

John Jay's next match will be on Saturday, October 22 when they travel to take on non-conference foe New Jersey City University. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
