JERSEY CITY, NJ - The John Jay women's volleyball team was swept (25-17, 28-26, 25-20) in a competitive, road contest by non-conference foe New Jersey City University on Saturday afternoon. The Bloodhounds fall to 12-10 on the season, while the Gothic Knights improve to 14-11 on the year.
The Gothic Knights took an early 7-3 lead in the first set, but John Jay answered with a 5-0 run capped by a kill from sophomore
Reilly Catan to take the lead. However, New Jersey City did not trail for long as they quickly came back with a 6-0 run of their own to re-take the lead which they would not relinquish.
Set two was a battle, as the two teams traded runs early, but the Gothic Knights eventually crawled out to a 24-22 lead. Then, Catan smacked back-to-back kills to tie up the set and send it to bonus rallies. The stalemate continued until it was 26-26 after a massive kill from sophomore
Paige Sadowitz, but New Jersey City would take the next two points to go up 2-0 in the match. The Gothic Knights would ride that momentum into set three and close out the sweep.
Catan led the Bloodhounds with eight kills in the match, while sophomore
Johnelle Pierre added six. Sophomore
Meghan Smith had a team-high 18 assists, while sophomore
Kristin Gretener led the team with seven digs.
John Jay's next match will be on Monday, October 24 when the Bloodhounds will welcome FDU-Florham to the Doghouse. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
