Women's Volleyball Takes Down Baruch 3-1 in Front of Loud Home Crowd

NEW YORK, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team was triumphant Tuesday evening, beating CUNYAC rival Baruch, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17), in front of a loud home crowd at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 13-11 on the season, and finish conference play with a 5-2 record. Meanwhile, the Bearcats fall to 14-12 on the year and finish the CUNYAC season with a mark of 4-3.

The Bloodhounds scored the first five points of the match, and quickly forced a Bearcat timeout as they tried to recover. Recover they did, as Baruch eventually worked back and tied the opening set at 23. However, after an attack error put the Bloodhounds in front, a kill from sophomore Faith Harer clinched the set and gave John Jay the lead.

Baruch answered with a solid second set to even up the match at 1-1. However, the Bloodhounds struck back by scoring eight of the first nine points of set three, highlighted by a monster kill up the middle from sophomore Paige Sadowitz. The Bearcats once again fought back and tied the set at 23, but another kill from Sadowitz but the Bloodhounds in the drivers seat. A beautiful service ace from sophomore Meghan Smith would put the finishing touches on things and give John Jay a 2-1 edge in the match.

Set four was a back-and-forth affair, which saw both teams trading points until the Bloodhounds had a slight 18-17 edge. At that point, the crowd came alive and helped carry the Bloodhounds on a 7-0 run to finish the match, capped by a service ace from sophomore Kristin Gretener. John Jay hung on to win 3-1.

Harer was dominant in the win, collecting another double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Smith amassed a match-high 33 assists to go with three service aces. Gretener led the team with 13 digs and also had three service aces. Sophomore Reilly Catan collected five kills and 10 digs. Sadowitz and sophomore Johnelle Pierre each had four total blocks. Sophomore Rylea Sandel chipped in nine kills.

John Jay has two road, non-conference matches to close the season, the first being on Thursday, October 27 against Rutgers-Camden. First sere is set for 7 p.m.
