NEW YORK, NY- The John Jay women's volleyball team closed out a brief two-match homestand on Thursday evening with a non-conference contest against St. Joseph's - Long Island. The Bloodhounds were defeated in four sets by the Golden Eagles, and fall to 7-7 on the season. The Golden Eagles improve to 8-6 on the year.
Set one began tightly contested, as John Jay and St. Joseph's were all knotted up at 16 nearly halfway through. The Golden Eagles would go on a 6-0 run from that point, and outscore the Bloodhounds 9-3 for the remainder of the set, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
John Jay would make this a match with a very competitive second set, which saw the Bloodhounds jump out to a quick 19-11 lead. St. Joseph's attempted a comeback with a 5-0 run, but sophomore
Reilly Catan put a halt to the run with a massive kill from the left side. John Jay would hold on to take a 25-22 win.
The third set began as a back-and-forth affair, leading to an 18-18 tie. The Golden Eagles regained momentum of the set, and thus the match, at that point when they went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-18 lead. Despite a kill from sophomore
Faith Harer who attempted to spark a comeback, St. Joseph's held on to go up 2-1 in the match. The Golden Eagles would close things out in set four to earn a 3-1 victory.
Sophomore
Meghan Smith notched another double-double, collecting 22 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore
Rylea Sandel smacked a team-high 11 kills, while Harer added eight to go along with five digs. Sophomore
Amanda Marte had seven digs, three service aces, and two kills. Sophomoe
Johnelle Pierre totaled four kills and three total blocks.
The Bloodhounds have Friday off, and will hit the court again on Saturday, October 8 for a CUNYAC tri-match hosted by Hunter College. John Jay will take on the Hawks at 10 a.m. followed by a contest against CCNY at noon.
