NEW YORK, NY- The John Jay women's volleyball team took part in a CUNYAC Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Hunter College. The Bloodhounds squared off against the Hawks in game one, but lost in three sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-23). Later in the day, John Jay swept (25-17, 25-15, 25-19) the CCNY Beavers, to earn a split on the day. The Bloodhounds move to 8-8 overall on the season, with a 3-1 mark in CUNYAC play.
In the game one contest against the Hawks, Hunter took control of the match early with quick victories in sets one and two. John Jay battled back in set three after going down 9-2 early to eventually take a 23-22 lead thanks to a 3-0 run highlighted by back-to-back kills from sophomores
Paige Sadowitz and
Johnelle Pierre. However, Hunter would answer with a 3-0 run of its own to come from behind and win the set, thus earning the sweep.
Sophomores
Reilly Catan and
Faith Harer had six kills each to lead the Bloodhounds. Sophomore
Meghan Smith tallied 18 assists to go with seven digs and a service ace. Sadowitz and Pierre combined for five total blocks.
The second match of the day against CCNY was much more favorable for John Jay. The Bloodhounds jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in set one, in part due to a 4-0 run capped by a kill from Sophomore
Rylea Sandel, and would not look back. John Jay would coast to a 25-17 victory, and ride the momentum of the great first set into set two. The Bloodhounds began the next frame on a 9-0 run, and did not trail for a single rally before taking a 25-15 win. Smith put the finishing touches on a 6-0 run to kick off set three, putting John Jay in prime position for a sweep which they would complete rather easily.
Sandel had a match-high 11 kills in game two, giving her 15 kills on the day. Sophomore
