New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team remained perfect at The Doghouse as five Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by a pair of double-doubles from
Bobbi Green and
Katie Healy as the Bloodhounds defeated the St. Joseph University Golden Eagles, 75-64, on Homecoming Night.
John Jay moves to 4-1 on the season with all four victories coming at home as the Golden Eagles fall to 1-1 on the season.
Green and
Chayanne Kelly each finished with a team-high 15 points, converting on a combined 10 of 16 from the field. Additionally, the pair hit on a combined 10 of 16 from the free-throw line. Kelly swiped a team-leading four steals in her 14 minutes of play. Green and
Katie Healy each produced double-digit rebound totals, with Healy pulling down a game-best 19 (14 of which coming on the defensive end). The Merrick, NY native added five assists and three steals in 36 minutes of action.
The Golden Eagles were paced by Lanyah Ford and Alyssa Adomaites, who poured in 22 and 20 points, respectively, on a combined 18 of 43 shooting from the field. Megan Spina added nine points and six rebounds while Catherine Siounis grabbed a team-best nine caroms.
"Once we stepped up on the defensive end and got on the boards, we were able to make our run," commented head coach Lynda Day following the team's second straight win. "It was another stellar performance by Bobbi (Green) and Katie (Healy) on the boards. Playing in front of our home crowd is always special, but, with today being Homecoming, it was an extra special feeling to win today. WE will enjoy it today but will quickly turn our attention to our next matchup on the weekend at Drew."
The Bloodhounds jumped out to an 11-2 lead, capped by a jumper from Green. SJCLI sparked a 15-4 run of their own over the next four minutes in taking a 17-15 lead as Adomaites was able to convert for her first points of the afternoon. John Jay closed out the first quarter with a 9-1 run of their own in building a 24-18 advantage.
The two teams kept pace with one another in the second quarter, with the home team upping its advantage to seven, 35-28, on a Healy layup, before Adomaites drilled a three-pointer at the 1:33 mark to trim the deficit to four, 35-31.
Spina made the backend of a two-shot foul as the Bloodhounds entered the break leading by three, 35-32.
The visitors took control of the momentum to start the second half, jumping out on a 10-2 run over the first 2:40 of the stanza to take a 42-37 lead. The Golden Eagles hit five of their first eight shots to start the frame, while holding the Bloodhounds without a made field goal during the span (0-7).
Kelly and Green were the catalyst for the Bloodhounds' comeback efforts, as the two combined for 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting while the Golden Eagles were held to just a 4 of 11 clip during the five minute burst as to tie the game at 50 with 1:16 left in the third quarter. St. Joseph's scored the final five points to take a 55-50 into the final period of play.
The Bloodhounds opened the final quarter of action on a 10-2 run over the first four minutes of the period, as
Jordyn Ruiz was able to bank home the left-handed layup, giving John Jay a 60-57 lead.
Spina hit two freebies for the visitors that brought the deficit to one, 60-59, before Green came back with a baseline jumper off Edwards fourth helper of the game, which pushed the lead back up to three, 62-59, with five minutes left in regulation.
John Jay closed out the game scoring 13 of the final 18 points to take home a 75-64 triumph and remain perfect on the season at the Doghouse.
The Bloodhounds shot 44.4 percent from the field while holding the visitors to just 33.8 percent. Both teams struggled from the outside, going a combined 5 of 24 but the Bloodhounds capitalized from the free throw line, converting 17 of 33 attempts while the visitors only hit 9 of 16.
John Jay outmuscled the Golden Eagles, 55-41, on the glass and held a 40-28 advantage on the defensive end.
The Bloodhounds will hit the road this weekend, as they will travel to Drew University on Saturday, November 26 before returning home on Monday, November 28 against Arcadia.
