New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team fell to the SUNY Maritime Privateers, 78-51, at The Doghouse on Tuesday evening.
Isaac Holmes and
Jayson Delgado were the leading scorers for the Bloodhounds on the night, each tallying eight points. Holmes added three steals and two assists.
Corey Jones Jr. corralled a team-high five rebounds.
Four Maritime players finished in double-figures led by Ryan Donovan, who netted a game-high 25 points on 9 of 17 shooting from the field.
Aleksandar Begovic recorded a double-double on the night, tallying 14 points and grabbing a game-leading 11 rebounds, eight of which came on the defensive end.
Robbie Mitchell and Theo Noble each poured in 13 points on a combined 11 of 20 shooting from the field with Mitchell securing eight caroms for the visitors.
Maritime opened the contest on a 7-2 run as the Privateers held the Bloodhounds to a 1 of 7 shooting to start with Holmes netting the first bucket of the game for John Jay.
The Bloodhounds trailed 11-4 at the 14:12 mark of the first half before the home team ignited a 6-2 run of their own over 90 seconds to cut the deficit down to three, 13-10, at the 12:45 mark.
Watkins hit the tough left-handed layup that brought the Bloodhounds to within one, 13-12, following the under-12 media timeout.
Maritime answered back with a 9-2 run over the next 3:17 in building a double-digit lead, 22-12, with Donovan leading the way with five of the nine points during the run.
Omar Calderon halted the visitors' run with a layup in the paint.
The visitors closed out the half on a 17-7 run as Maritime converted on 7 of 9 from the field with Donovan pacing Maritime's offense with 11 points over the nearly six-minute stretch, as Maritime built a 18-point lead, 39-21.
The Bloodhounds were held under 30.0 percent shooting in the opening half while the visitors hit at a 53.3 percent clip.
The visitors outscored John Jay, 28-22, over the final 14:14 as the Privateers connected on 50.0 percent from the field (12 of 24) and held the Bloodhounds to just 9 of 27 from the field and 2 of 10 shooting display from three-point range.
John Jay was outmuscled on the boards, 47-26, while Maritime collected 36 defensive boards to the Bloodhounds' 19.
The Bloodhounds open up CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play on Saturday as they welcome CCNY to the Doghouse at 3:00 p.m.
