Men's Basketball Edged By CCNY In CUNYAC Opener On Late Layup, 66-64, On Saturday Afternoon

New York, NY -  The John Jay men's basketball team was edged by the CCNY Beavers, 66-64, on what turned out to be the game-winning layup from Dashaun Galloway with five seconds in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opener on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Five Bloodhounds reached double-figures on the day, with Garrison Watkins, Isaac Holmes, Jamir Stewart and Omar Calderon each scoring 11 points. Jayson Delgado added 10 points in 23 minutes of play. 
 
Holmes grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Watkins led the team with three assists and two blocks while Stewart swiped three steals. 
 
Three Beavers reached double-figures, led by Michael Bowman, who netted a game-high 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field in 24 minutes of play. 
 
Galloway scored 13 points, which included the game-winner in the closing seconds, while converting on 6 of 13 from the floor. Amir Assani also netted 13 points. 
 
CCNY's leading scorer, Yassine Sakhi, was limited to just eight points on 4 of 14 shooting from the field while logging 35 minutes. Bayame Bah grabbed 18 rebounds in 24 minutes of action. 
 
Both teams traded baskets in the opening moments of the contest before Bleron Lata converted on a layup that made it 10-10 at the 10:55 mark. 
 
Over the next four minutes, the Bloodhounds scored eight of the next 12 points in building a slim four-point advantage, 18-14, after Stewart hit on the layup. 
 
John Jay found their touch on the offensive end, closing out the half on a 14-9 burst in taking a 32-23 halftime lead as Holmes netted five of the 14 points. Corey Jones Jr. hit a triple with 49 seconds that gave the home the nine-point advantage. 
 
CCNY opened up the second half on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to one, 34-33, as Sakhi converted on a layup off the feed from Galloway. 
 
Delgado made one of two from the free-throw line as John Jay claimed a two-point lead but Galloway responded for the visitors with a jumper to knot the game at 35. 
 
Similar to the first half, the teams traded baskets until Bowman hit from the outside to give CCNY a 40-39 edge. 
 
On the ensuing Bloodhound possession, Stewart was able to rattle in a three-pointer of his own as John Jay went back ahead. 
 
Over the next 6:36, the Beavers sparked a 21-12 run of their own in building a 61-54 lead with 4:24 as Bowman was the catalyst for the visitors, netting 11 of those points. 
 
The Bloodhounds were relentless in their comeback attempt, igniting a 10-3 run to tie the contest at 64 with two minutes remaining, as Jones Jr. hit the layup after getting the ball from Watkins, which brought the Bloodhound faithful to a roar. 
 
With 1:21 left in regulation, Galloway hoisted up a three-pointer from beyond the top of the key that was tracked down by Jones Jr but John Jay gave the ball back to the visitors. with under a minute to go. 
 
With 39 seconds, Assani turned it over as John Jay reclaimed possession. Stewart misfired on a three as Galloway tracked the loose ball and was able to sprint down the lane for the layup that pushed the Beavers ahead, 66-64, with five second remaining. 
 
John Jay had one final chance as Stewart hoisted a shot a few steps from mid-court, but the ball sailed over the backboard as CCNY held on for the win. 
 
The Bloodhounds converted on 41.3 percent from the field while hitting on 35.0 percent from the outside. 
 
CCNY was a +9 on the boards (44-35) while outmuscling the Bloodhounds, 20-7, on the offensive end. 
 
John Jay will have a quick turnaround as the Bloodhounds will host the College at Old Westbury at the Doghouse on Sunday, December 4, at 3:00 PM.
