"Tonight's crowd energy was amazing!" Head Coach
Lynda Day said. "This was a great team win to open the season. We learned a lot about ourselves and what we need to work on to continue to improve."
Less than a minute into the season, Green nailed a jumper to give the Bloodhounds their first points of the new year. However, the Rams would then go on a 9-2 run to immediately give the Bloodhounds some adversity in the first quarter. John Jay would deal with it well, as Kelly was a spark plug off the bench, nailing a three-pointer to cap a 5-0 run which tied the game at 9-9. The first quarter would end with the Bloodhounds leading 20-13.
The Bloodhounds offense kept rolling in the second quarter, thanks to a massive period from Hammond who scored seven of the team's 21 points in the quarter to go with four rebounds, a steal, and an assist. John Jay's defense held the Rams to just 14 points in the frame on 30% shooting. The Bloodhounds would head into the locker room leading 41-27.
John Jay's lead would grow as large as 28 in the second half, thanks to stellar shooting from Zeolla who was 5-5 in the half for 11 points. She was also an anchor on defense in the period, collecting two blocks and two steals. The Rams would attempt a late comeback push and eventually cut the deficit to 17, but there was no more time on the clock and the massive Bloodhound lead proved to be too much. John Jay held on to win 71-54.
John Jay's defense forced 27 turnovers, which included 18 steals from the Bloodhounds. They held the Rams to just 37% shooting in the game, including 20% from deep. John Jay also out-rebounded Farmingdale State, 38-31.
The Bloodhounds will be back at it on Saturday, November 12 when they will host Rutgers-Camden at noon at the Doghouse.
