Senior Katie Healy registers fifth-straight double-double

Riverdale, NY – Trailing 45-32 with under four minutes left to play in regulation, the John Jay women's basketball team staged a dramatic comeback attempt, going on a 13-3 run down the stretch but it wasn't enough as John Jay fell to the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins, 48-45, on Thursday evening.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 4-4 on the season while the Dolphins move to 3-2 on the season.

Senior forward Katie Healy registered her fifth straight double-double, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 9 of 17 shooting while pulling down a game-high 17 rebounds, 14 of those on the defensive end.

Bobbi Green was the second Bloodhound to score in double-figures, as she finished with 14 points on 5 of 13 shooting from the floor while recording three steals, three rebounds, and two assists in 33 minutes of play.

The Dolphins also had two players score in double-figures, led by Amber Been, who netted a team-best 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting while pulling down six rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 26 minutes of action. Melanieann Broderick added 10 points, five rebounds, a block, and a steal in her 27 minutes.

John Jay opened the contest on a 7-0 run with Green accounting for four of the seven points over the first 2:30 of the ballgame.

Mount Saint Vincent ignited a 12-5 run to take their first lead of the game, 12-10, as Kayla Hanley was able to convert on the layup chance. The Dolphins converted on 6 of 8 from the field over the five minutes while limiting the Bloodhounds to just 1 of 7 shooting.

Shania Wolfe-White added a layup off the feed from Hanley as the Dolphins increased their lead before Healy closed out the quarter with a layup of her own as the Bloodhounds trailed by two, 14-12.

Chayanne Kelly quickly tied the game for the visitors to kick off the second quarter at 14-14 before Kira Villegas hit the back end of a two-shot foul that gave the lead back to the Dolphins.

Sofia Marcos also hit the front end of a two-shot foul to add to the CMSV advantage. Both teams struggled from the field over the next two minutes before Broderick converted on the mid-range jumper, extending the home team's lead to four, 18-14.

Healy ended the scoring drought for the Bloodhounds with a layup for her seventh point of the contest.

The two teams couldn't find their rhythm down the stretch, as CMSV got a made free-throw from Marcos and a jumper by Amber Bean to conclude the first half with a 21-16 edge.

When the second half commenced, the Dolphins continued to build upon their lead after Villegas was able to convert on a jumper.

Green and Healy added back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to five, 25-20, at the 7:04 mark.

The Dolphins used an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take their largest lead of the contest, 33-20, as Bean was able to hit the jumper.

Green hit the backend of a two-shot foul as did Victoria Brown, who was making her season debut, with the Bloodhounds trailing 33-22 before Broderick ended the stanza with a layup just before the horn sounded to push the lead back up to 13.

John Jay used a big fourth quarter to stage their late comeback. Over the first 4:26 of the frame, the Bloodhounds scored eight of the first 12 points in the stanza to bring the deficit down to nine points, 39-30, as Kelly was able to put in two via a tough layup.

Broderick added two free-throws to push the lead back to double-digits before Been netted two on a layup that made it 43-30 with 4:27 showing on the clock.

The visitors rallied back behind a 10-2 run over the next 3:18 to get within five points, 45-40, as Healy completed the traditional three-point play. Been added two more from the charity stripe that increased the lead back to seven with under a minute to play.

Green scored the final five points for the visitors, capped by a three-pointer off Ayanna Edwards' third assist of the game but the final horn sounded as the Dolphins escaped with a three-point victory.
