Four Bloodhounds Score In Double-Digits As Men's Basketball Earns Wire-To-Wire Win Over Old Westbury

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team opened up Sunday's contest on a 17-2 run and didn't look back as the Bloodhounds picked up their first win of the season, 88-69, over Old Westbury, on Sunday afternoon at the Doghouse.

"Today was a fun one for our guys," commented head coach Ryan Hyland. "The start to our season has definitely added extra pressure to every possession, but it was nice to shed some of that weight off our shoulders today with an outstanding team performance."

The 88 points scored today are a season-high as John Jay tallied 24 total assists in the process, setting a new season-high as well.

"Our guys shared the ball the way we trusted they can and we saw some great individual efforts that came from that," added Hyland.

Four Bloodhounds scored in double-figures led by Isaac Holmes, who netted a game-high 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field. The East Brunswick, NJ native grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists and had two steals in 25 minutes.

Bleron Lata provided a spark off the bench, as he erupted for 20 points on an efficient 6 of 10 shooting from the field, with all six made field goals coming from three-point range in 17 minutes of play. The Staten Island, NY native added five rebounds as well.

"Today was the day that we got a glimpse of the Bleron we all know and love," mentioned Hyland. "He's worked so hard to get back to a place where he can help his teammates, and today, we saw the catalyst he can be for our offense."

Jayson Delgado, earning his first start of the season, netted 15 points on a 5 of 11 marksmanship from the field while corralling a team-leading seven caroms.

Corey Jones Jr. was the fourth Bloodhound to reach double-figures, as the Merrick, NY native contributed 10 points in 28 minutes.

Garrison Watkins filled up the stat sheet in his 31 minutes of action, scoring eight points, dishing out a team-leading seven assists, grabbing six rebounds, swiping two steals and added a block.

The Panthers had three players score in double-digits, as Chris Smith powered the Old Westbury offense with 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Carl Damour added 12 points while Max Weinberg registered a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

John Jay hit on six of their first ten shots, which included a 4 of 7 clip from the outside, as Delgado and Holmes each had eight points after the first five minutes of play.

The Bloodhounds had a balanced offensive gameplan over the remaining stretch of the first half, as John Jay built a 43-20 lead following a Watkins layup, as seven different players contributed to the Bloodhounds 26-18 scoring output.

Weinberg added a layup for the visitors just before the first half horn sound as Old Westbury trailed by 21, 43-22.

John Jay scored 43 points on 41.0 percent from the field while hitting 7 of 16 from long range (43.8 percent).

The visitors opened the second half of play scoring nine of the first 14 points of the frame over a two-minute span, trimming the deficit to 48-31, at the 17:39 mark.

During the run, Lata was connected on 14 of his 20 points as the team went 8 of 18 from the field and 5 of 10 from long distance while holding Old Westbury to just a 4 of 11 shooting display.
