NEW YORK, NY -- The men's volleyball team defeated #5 Brooklyn College, 3-1 (25-17, 13-25, 25-19, 25-16), in the CUNYAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. With the win, John Jay improves to 10-11 on the season, while Brooklyn finishes the year with a 6-16 record.
Set one started off very evenly, leading to a 7-7 tie. The Bloodhounds took six of the next seven points to take a five point advantage, and never looked back. After taking a 1-0 lead in the match, a hiccup in set two allowed the Bulldogs to tie the match back up at 1-1. With the match hanging in the balance heading into a crucial third set, freshman
Kyle Barriffe-Johnson and
Stephen De Stefani combined for a massive block to kick-off the set which sparked the crowd and the rest of the team. The Bloodhounds would score the first four points of the set, and never relinquish that lead. John Jay carried that momentum into the fourth set and a block from sophomore
Jack Nugent sealed the victory.
The freshman duo of
Logan Ramos and
Akashdeep Singh put the team on their backs on the offensive side of the ball. The pair combined for 30 kills, seven digs, one block, and two service aces to lead the Bloodhounds. Barriffe-Johnson chipped in six kills, five total blocks, and two service aces. Nugent tallied five kills and three solo blocks. De Stefani added six kills and five total blocks. Sophomore
Manuel Peralta dished out 33 assists. Sophomore
Bryce Glasper collected 14 digs.
The Bloodhounds advance to the CUNYAC Semifinals and will travel to take on #1 Hunter College on Thursday, April 7 at 7 p.m.
