Women's Volleyball Drops Back And Forth Non-Conference Tilt At Cairn

Meghan Smith ties career-high with 51 assists

Langhorne, PA - The John Jay women's volleyball team (6-3) fell to the Cairn University Highlanders (9-2) in a tight, five-set contest by a 3-2 score Tuesday evening. 
 
John Jay was led by Megan Smith, as she tied a career-high with 51 assists while also notching 10 digs for her second straight double-double. 
   
Taylor Hunt concluded the match with a team-leading 26 digs to go along with four aces. 
 
Reigning CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Week, Faith Harer, ended the match with a team-leading 12 kills and 10 digs. 
 
Amanda Marte rounded out the trio of Bloodhounds who produced a double-double in the match, as she recorded 15 digs and 11 kills. 
 
Caroline Conrad paced the Highlanders with 23 digs and seven kills. Kali Burres-Cheeley and Olivia Zepp each had 18 digs with Zepp leading the way with 36 assists. Allison Barnes had a Cairn high 16 kills in the match. 
 
The Bloodhounds took the first set 25-19 after Taylor Hunt led the way with six digs while teammate Megan Smith had seven assists. 
 
The Highlanders raced out to a 6-1 advantage in the second set and upped their advantage to a ten-point lead, 16-6, before Rylea Sandel recorded a kill to stop the run. The visitors went on a 10-4 run in the set to trim the deficit to four, 20-16, before Cairn posted back-to-back points.  
 
In the third set, the two teams traded points before John Jay recorded five straight points, capped by a Marte kill from Meghan Smith that made it 12-8 in favor of the Bloodhounds. The Highlanders closed the gap with an 8-5 spurt that made it a 17-16 Bloodhound advantage. John Jay was able to close the set on a kill by Johnelle Pierre, as the Bloodhounds went up 2-1 thanks to a 25-23 triumph. 

 
 
The Highlanders raced out to a 6-3 lead in the fourth set after a kill by Barnes from Zepp. The lead increased thanks to an 8-2 run that saw Cairn double-up John Jay, 15-7. 
 
With the Highlanders ahead 20-10, the Bloodhounds came roaring back in the set, as John Jay scored the next seven points that trimmed the lead down to three, 20-17, before two straight points by the Highlander made it a five-point lead (22-17). Cairn closed the set and evened the match at 2-2 after a kill by Burres-Cheeley. 
 
In the fifth and deciding set, it would be the Bloodhounds that grabbed the early advantage, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. The Highlanders answered back with three straight points to make a one-score lead for John Jay (7-6). 
 
Following a service error by Caroline Bennett that gave John Jay a 12-11 advantage, the Highlanders closed the match out with four straight points to pick up their ninth win of the season. 
 
The Bloodhounds return home to The Doghouse on Thursday, September 29 as John Jay welcomes Pratt for a 7:00 p.m. first-serve.
