Six Bloodhounds Net Double-Figures As John Jay Defeats Hunter, 118-110, On Wednesday

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team outlasted the Hunter College Hawks in a near wire-to-wire, high-scoring CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)  tilt 118-110 on Wednesday.
 
 
 
Six different Bloodhounds reached double-figures on the evening, led by Jayson Delgado, who poured in a team-leading 27 points on an efficient 11 of 14 shooting from the field. Delgado added five rebounds, three assists, and a steal in his 31 minutes of play. 
 
Garrison Watkins was the second Bloodhound to reach the 20-point plateau, netting 23 points on a 9 of 13 showing from the floor while grabbing four rebounds in his 25 minutes. 
 
Jordan Evelyn contributed 19 points on just 2 of 2 shooting from the floor. 15 of his 19 points came from the charity stripe as he went 15 of 17. The Hempstead, NY native dished out seven helpers, while recording a team-leading four steals and grabbed three caroms. 
 
Isaac Holmes filled up the stat sheet on the evening, notching his first career double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He came within two assists of registering a triple-double, as he distributed a team-high eight assists while adding a block and a steal. 
 
Adrian Kopec and Corey Jones Jr. rounded out the scoring performances for the Bloodhounds, as Kopec ended the night with 14 points and Jones Jr. added 11. The two converted on 9 of 16 from the field while the duo hit 7 of 12 combined from three-point range as Kopec drilled a team-leading four triples. 

"I am really proud of our guys discipline and unselfishness tonight," commented head coach Ryan Hyland. "It's always hard to play and adjust to a certain style of play, but, our team was composed and poised and didn't stray away from the gameplan and executed at a very high rate. One the goals for tonight was to play team basketball, and we were successful in doing so." 
 
Five Hawks also netted double digits led by Devon Matthews, who paced Hunter with 29 points on 10 of 18 shooting from field in 19 minutes of play. Ryan Lau added 14 points in 19 minutes on a 5 of 7 marksmanship from the floor, which included a 4 of 5 display from three-point range. Enzo Caceres-Roussel matched Lau with 14 points while dishing out a team-high eight assists. He also swiped five steals in the contest. Jeremy Montrose added 11 points in his 20 minutes of action while Donovon Cola contributed 10 points. 

The Bloodhounds raced out to a 6-2 lead after Delgado completed the traditional three-point play after converting on a driving layup. John Jay outscored Hunter, 14-9, over a three-minute span in taking a 20-14 advantage after Kopec hit from the outside. The high-scoring sequence was initiated by the visiting Bloodhounds, as they outscored the Hawks, 32-21, over a nine-minute stretch in taking a 58-48 lead with 1:43 to go before halftime as Evelyn hit on the driving layup. 

John Jay entered the break with a 12-point lead, 62-50, after Watkins netted his 16th point of the stanza off the feed from Holmes. The Bloodhounds shot a blistering 60.0 percent from the field (24 of 40) while hitting on 75.0 percent from three-point range (6 of 8). The tenacious defense put forth by John Jay limited the Hawks to just a 38.0 percent start from the floor while limiting their chances from deep, as Hunter was 7 of 26 from the outside in the opening half. 

When play resumed for the second half, John Jay extended their lead up to 14, 66-52, following a floating jumper by Jones Jr. Hunter mounted a comeback, outscoring John Jay 20-7 over a near six-minute stretch as the Bloodhounds held on to a 73-72 lead after Caceres-Roussel hit on both attempts from the line. The two teams continued to trade baskets midway through regulation, as John Jay staked a seven-point advantage, 87-80, following a pair of made freebies from Evelyn. 

The Bloodhounds remained in the driver's seat, increasing their lead to 97-87 with 5:09 showing on the game clock after Evelyn made a pair from the line. The Hawks managed to outscore John Jay, 23-21, down the stretch, but the Bloodhounds held on for the 18-point victory, moving back to .500 in conference play. 

For the game, John Jay shot 59.1 percent from the field (39 of 66) while hitting on 64.7 from three-point range. The Bloodhounds converted on 82.9 percent from the charity stripe. Hunter held a +4 advantage on the boards, 43-39, but John Jay outmuscled the Hawks on the defensive glass, 31-22. 

The men's basketball team returns home to the Doghouse on Saturday afternoon as they will take on Lehman at 3:00 p.m.
