Women's Basketball Hands Hunter First CUNYAC Defeat, 74-63; Hammond Nets Team-High 25

New York, NY - Junior guard Kamryn Hammond registered her second double-double of the season as John Jay delivered Hunter's first CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) setback, besting the Hawks, 74-63 on Wednesday evening. 

 

 
Hammond netted a season and John Jay high 25 points on 8 of 19 while hitting on 4 of 10 from three-point range. The Poughkeepsie, NY native also corralled a season-high 13 rebounds, 11 of those coming on defensive end. Hammond added four steals and three assists in her 37 minutes action. 
 
Senior forward Katie Healy recorded her 56th career double-double, as the Merrick, NY native scoring 15 points on 7 of 17 shooting while grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds in 38 minutes of play. Healy dished out a game-high six assists as well. 
 
With her 16 rebounds this evening, Healy is inching closer to becoming the second player in program history to reach 1,000 career rebounds, as she sits with 978 career rebounds (280 offensive, 698 defensive). 
 
Sophomore forward Ashley Zeolla reached double-figures for the third time in her last four contests, as she finished the evening scoring 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field while securing seven caroms in 28 minutes of action. 
 
Ayanna Edwards added nine points while dishing out five assists. Tiffany Bogle scored eight points and was the third Bloodhound to grab double-figure rebounds, securing ten. Jordan Ruiz chipped in six points off-the-bench.
 
Alexa Charles led the way for Hunter, scoring 27 points on 11 of 28 shooting from the field while coming one rebound shy of a double-double. She added five steals, three blocks and an assist. 
 
Kimberly Lau was the second Hawk to reach double-figures, as she netted 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting while dishing out six assists and swiping three steals.
 
"An offensive breakout game form Kamryn [Hammond] tonight helped pace us on the offensive end," commented head coach Lynda Day. "She helped Katie (Healy), Tiffany (Bogle) and Ashley (Zeolla) on the boards. Our bench was vital for us as well, as Jordyn (Ruiz) orchestrated some great plays on both ends as we were able to pick up the win against a tough and previously unbeaten conference foe in Hunter."
 
John Jay jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, capped by an Ashley Zeolla layup off the feed from Healy. Hunter rallied back, thanks to an 8-0 run that spanned a minute, as Kennedy DeRuy and Katie Burke each connected from the outside. 
 
The Hawks built a five-point cushion, 14-9, thanks to another triple from Erin Cosio. The visitors narrowed the deficit, outscoring Hunter, 6-3, over the final 2:14 of the first quarter, as Bogle's layup from Ayanna Edwards brought the Bloodhounds to within two, 17-15. 
 
Bogle commenced the second quarter by tying the game at 17 thanks to a putback layup after following up a misfired shot by Hammond. 
 
The Bloodhounds continued their hot start in the second quarter, sparking an 11-4 run over a four-minute stretch, taking a 28-22, as Hammond converted on the left-handed driving layup. 
 
During the run, John Jay held Hunter to just a 1 of 7 shooting display while Hammond and Healy combined for nine of the 11 points during the run. 
 
Both teams struggled to the break, shooting a combined 4 of 15 from the field as the Bloodhounds took a 34-27 halftime lead with Hammond leading the way for the visitors with 10 points. 
 
Hunter narrowed the gap in the early portion of the third quarter, as the Hawks trailed by four, 36-32, following a three-pointer from Burke. 
 
The two teams traded buckets over the next 4:35, with Hunter slightly outscoring the Bloodhounds, 14-11, to trail by one, 47-46, following a Nia Chung layup with 2:44 left to play in the third quarter. 
 
John Jay regained the momentum, closing out the period on a 6-2 run, capped by a Healy pull-up off the assist from Edwards as the visitors went ahead 53-48 heading into the final quarter. 
 
The Bloodhounds added to its run to with five straight points in opening the fourth quarter, making it a larger 11-2 spark that was capped by a Hammond trifecta, pushing the John Jay lead to double-digits, 58-48.
 
On the ensuing Hunter possession, Charles buried the mid-range jumper but was quickly answered by a second straight triple from Hammond as the lead was pushed back to double-figures, 61-50. 
 
Charles put the Hawks on her shoulders, scoring the next 11 points for the home team, trimming the deficit down to seven, 68-61, with 2:14 left to play. 
 
Healy found Ruiz for the pull jumper that gave John Jay a 70-61 advantage with 1:53 remaining. Charles netted the final score of the night for Hunter before Edwards and Hammond one free throw each and Healy ended the scoring with a layup as the Bloodhounds earned the double-digit win. 
 
John Jay converted on 45.5 percent from the floor (30 of 66) while holding the Hawks to just 31.5 percent from the field (23 of 73). 
 
The Bloodhounds corralled 56 total rebounds, 36 of those coming on the defensive end while holing a +21 advantage in that department. 
 
John Jay returns to the Doghouse on Saturday afternoon as they will host Lehman. 
 
Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
