Fourth Quarter Surge Lifts Women's Basketball To Fourth Straight Win, Defeats Baruch 79-61

Katie Healy grabs 1,000 career rebound in the triumph.

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team overcame a four-point halftime deficit in outscoring the Baruch Bearcats, 27-9, in the fourth quarter, as the Bloodhounds won their fourth straight contest, 79-61, on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, John Jay moves to 10-7 on the year and 4-2 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while Baruch falls to 9-7 and 3-2 in conference.

Saturday marked another milestone for senior forward Katie Healy. At the 7:12 mark of the fourth quarter, the Merrick, NY native corralled her 1,000th career rebound, becoming just the second John Jay women's basketball player to reach the plateau since Jamecia Forsythe (2010-14), who grabbed 1,233 for her career (420 offensive, 813 defensive).

Four Bloodhounds reach double-figures in the win, led by Bobbi Green and Kamryn Hammond, who each finished with 16 points on a combing 9 of 17 shooting from the field as both played 34 minutes.

Green notched her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with the 16 points and team-leading 13 rebounds. The Queens, NY native also dished out a team-high seven assists.

Hammond registered her eighth double-digit scoring game of the season and fourth straight, concluding with 16 points on 5 of 8 shooting.

Ashley Zeolla added 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting while recording two blocks in her 23 minutes.

Healy added 10 points and came one rebound shy of her 57th double-double, ending with nine rebounds, giving her 1,002 for her career.

Tiffany Bogle came within one point of recording a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

"A very special congratulations to Katie (Healy) on her 1,000th rebound," commented head coach Lynda Day. "Her four seasons is a testament of consistency and hard work paying off."

"We played cohesively, as our defensive effort stood out, not only with Bobbi (Green) but Kamryn (Hammond) as well. Additionally, Ayanna (Edwards) gave us great minutes off the bench to help force pressure on Baruch's best player," Day added. "A combination of on ball defense and being dominant on the glass helped us pull away and stage that big fourth quarter which helped us secure the win."

Mia Castillo led all scorers with 25 points on 9 of 28 shooting from the floor. She added five assists and a team-best five steals while playing the full forty minutes.

Elissa Leung was the second Bearcat in double-figures, scoring 12 points while dishing out a team-leading six assists in 40 minutes of play.

The Bearcats raced out to a 8-4 lead before Zeolla knotted the game up with a layup.

The Bloodhounds posted a 10-6 run over the next 4:07 in taking a four-point lead as Chayanne Kelly hit the backend of a two-shot foul at the 1:20 mark to give John Jay a 18-14 advantage.

The visitors closed out the first quarter with five straight points to claim a 19-18 lead.

Zeolla got the scoring going in the second quarter as John Jay reclaimed the lead but Baruch battled back in the frame, outscoring John Jay, 18-13, down the stretch in posting a 37-33 halftime lead.

Over the first three minutes of the third, the momentum started to swing in favor of the Bloodhounds, as Zeolla served as the catalyst, netting her 12th point of the game that brought John Jay within one, 40-39, with 6:57 left.

The Bloodhounds continued to carry the wave of momentum, outscoring the opponents, 13-12, over the final 5:41 in tying the game at 52 after Bogle hit from top of the key.

John Jay opened the fourth quarter with a 13-5 run in building a 65-57 lead as Hammond converted from the outside off the feed from Green before Leung put a halt to the run.

The Bloodhounds capped off their fourth straight win, closing out the ballgame on a 14-2 run in posting their 11th victory of the season.

John Jay shot 45.8 percent from the field while holding Baruch to just 30.7 percent (23 of 75). The Bloodhounds capitalized from the line, going to the charity stripe 32 times and hitting 22 of those chances.

The Bloodhounds were a +23 on the boards, outmuscling the visitors 55-32 and 38-18 on the defensive end.
