Strong Third Quarter Along With Late Free Throws Extends Women's Basketball Win Streak To Five; Defeats York, 68-65

Jamaica, NY -  The John Jay women's basketball team trailed by one at the half but outscored York, 22-13, in the third, and capped the comeback with late free-throws to earn their fifth straight win, 68-65, on Tuesday evening. 

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while the Cardinals fall to 8-8 and 4-4 in league contests. 
 
"When we needed it the most, we were able to buckle down and played solid team defense," commented head coach Lynda Day. "We picked up the intensity on the defensive end, especially when we implemented our full court press, which helped quicken the pace of the contest. Tonight, was a key conference win. I am proud of the effort we displayed and now we turn our attention to our home contest on Saturday against Hunter."
 
Five John Jay players scored in double-figures on the evening, led by senior forward Katie Healy, who netted a team-high 16 points on 5 of 13 shooting while recording her 57th career double-double, grabbing a game-high 14 caroms in 35 minutes of action. 

Kamryn Hammond netted 14 points, nine of which came from three-point range (3 of 6) while the Poughkeepsie, NY native dished out a team-leading six assists in 38 minutes. Ashley Zeolla and Tiffany Bogle each scored 12 points on a combined 12 of 24 shooting from the field. Bogle notched her first career double-double, grabbing ten caroms in her 29 minutes of action. Bobbi Green added 10 points along with five rebounds and three assists in 34 minutes. 

York had four players reach double digits as Ellma Hodzic and Alicia Gumbs each netted 14 points on a combined 11 of 27 shooting from the field. Hodzic added eight rebounds, four assists, and a team-high five steals.  Gumbs, who converted on 6 of 12 from the field, matched Hodzic with four helpers while also adding three rebounds before fouling out. 

Mac-Dege Dessources notched a double-double, scoring 12 points on just 4 of 9 shooting while pulling in ten rebounds and leading York with five blocks. Aminata Sagna rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals with 10 points on just 3 of 7 shooting. She grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and had two steals. 

The Bloodhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead with Zeolla scoring four of the six to start. The Cardinals staged a 16-2 run over seven minutes doubling the score to 16-8. York held the visitors to just a 1 of 11 shooting display during the run. The home team converted on 7 of 13, as Hodzic/Gumbs/Dessources accounted for 12 of the 16 points before Zeolla halted the run with a layup off the feed from Healy.  

The Bloodhounds opened the second quarter on a 12-4 run to tie the game at 22 following Hammond's two made free-throws. John Jay upped the run to 17-4 following a Green layup and a three-pointer from Hammond, as the visitors led 27-22 with 4:46 remaining before halftime. Dessources closed out the half for York scoring all six points, as the Cardinals went into the break holding a 28-27 advantage. 

York extended their lead to six following five points from Hodzic to open the third quarter. Bogle single handily netted eight straight points for the visitors to retake the lead, 35-33, after hitting 4 of 5 over the first two minutes of the stanza. Overall, John Jay opened the third on a 13-0 run, as Hammond's three-pointer extended the lead to seven, 40-33. Kristina Sierra put an end to the outburst with a three-pointer of her own. The Bloodhounds scored nine of the final 14 points of the frame in taking a 49-41 leading into the fourth quarter. 

In the fourth, Healy's jumper off the feed from Hammond increased the lead to eight, 51-43. York stirred their comeback attempt as Imani Gibson converted on a layup from Sagna.  Over the next five minutes, both teams traded off baskets, as the Cardinals outscored John Jay, 13-7, to tie the game at 58 following a Gibson mid-range jumper. Healy responded on the ensuing Bloodhounds possession, as the visitors held a two-point edge with 2:40 left to play as John Jay called for time.

Following the timeout, Bogle was called for a foul, with Madison Plaza hitting the backend of the two-shot foul, narrowing the gap to one, 60-59. Healy again came up big for the Bloodhounds, netting her 12th point of the contest as the lead went to three, 62-59, with 2:07 showing on the game clock. Sagna converted her free throws, chipping the lead down to 62-61 with exactly two minutes remaining. 

John Jay couldn't convert on two chances, but Healy outworked the defender in securing the rebound and getting fouled. The Merrick, NY native hit one of two as York corralled the rebound. Sagna missed on a jumper as did Dessources on the putback chance before Bogle grabbed the loose ball. 

A potential game-altering miscue by the Bloodhounds put York back on the line, as Hodzic hit on both attempts, tying the game at 63 with 1:16 left. Dessources fouled Green, as she picked up her fifth and final foul of the contest. Green, on the other hand, hit one of two, as John Jay led by one, 64-63, before York called for time. When play resumed, Hammond was whistled for a foul on Plaza with 32 seconds. Plaza hit on both attempts, giving the Cardinals the lead back, 65-64, as the Bloodhounds called for time. 

On John Jay's possession, Sagna was tagged with the foul, her fifth and final, which sent Healy to the line, where the veteran forward hit on both attempts, giving the lead back to the Bloodhounds, 66-65. Plaza turned the ball over following the timeout as Green stole the ball away and was immediately fouled. The Queens native hit one of two, as the Bloodhounds took a 67-65 lead with 21 seconds to go. Gibson's strong layup chance was tracked down by Healy, who made one of two from the line as John Jay escaped Jamaica, NY with their fifth straight win.

ohn Jay finished the contest shooting 33.3 percent from the field. The Bloodhounds held a 43-37 edge on the boards, highlighted by an 18-11 advantage on the offensive glass. The Bloodhounds created 24 York turnovers and netted 27 points off those mishaps. John Jay swiped 15 steals in the contest. 

John Jay will look for their sixth straight win on Saturday, as the Bloodhounds will host Hunter at The Doghouse at 1:00 p.m.
