Men's Basketball Drops Home Conference Tilt To Baruch, 80-68, On Saturday

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team dropped its home CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) contest on Saturday afternoon, falling to Baruch, 80-68, at The Doghouse.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds falter to 4-14 and 3-4 in the league. The Bearcats improve to 13-5 and 5-2 in the conference.

Jayson Delgado paced the John Jay offense, as he was one of three players to score in double-figures, finishing with a game-high 19 points on 7 of 12 shooting and converting on 5 of 7 from three-point range. He also added six rebounds and dished out a team-high four steals in his 34 minutes of action.

Garrison Watkins chipped in 12 points on 5 of 12 shooting while dishing out a team-leading six helpers in his 30 minutes of action.

Corey Jones Jr. was the third John Jay player in double-digits, concluding the contest with 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting while hitting on 3 of 5 from the outside.

Baruch had a balanced scoring attack on display, as Sayeed Osorio and Michael Gannon each scored 15 points on a combined 11 of 20 shooting from the field. Osorio grabbed seven rebounds in 29 minutes of play.

Devin Nicholson netted 13 points in 17 minutes of action on 4 of 6 shooting. Jehmehl Fair and Akil Vaughnn each netted 12 points with Vaughnn shooting a perfect 6 of 6 while matching Osorio for the team lead on the boards with seven.

"Tough one for us today but give credit to Baruch and their guys for playing well and making things difficult for us," commented head coach Ryan Hyland

"I'm proud of our effort to cut into the lead late in the game and our guys never stopped fighting," added Hyland. "We turn the page now to the second half of conference play and excited for the tasks at hand to get another opportunity to climb in the standings on Tuesday at York."

Baruch jumped out to an early 8-3 lead after Osorio hit from the outside. From that point, the Bearcats sparked a 16-9 run in doubling up John Jay, 24-12, following a Vaughnn jumper at the 9:41 mark but answered by a Delgado trifecta to halt the run.

Both teams found their rhythm, as over the final 9:24, the two clubs posted 32 points with the Bearcats holding a slim edge, 18-14.

The Bloodhounds converted 6 of 11 from the floor during this span while Baruch hit on 8 of 16. Delgado served as the John Jay catalyst, scoring eight of the 14 points despite the home team heading into the break down by 16, 42-26.

John Jay opened up the second half on fire, as Jones Jr. scored the first five points of the stanza, opening up with a three and then converting on a layup after Delgado stole the ball away.

Similar to the final 9:24 of the first half, both teams traded baskets over the majority of the frame, as John Jay outscored Baruch, 30-29, to cut the lead down to ten, 71-61, after Delgado rattled in a corner triple.

The visitors closed out the contest scoring nine of the final 16 points in posting the 12-point road triumph.

Both teams were efficient from three-point range, with John Jay hitting on 46.2 percent (12 of 26) to Baruch's 45.8 (11 of 24).

The visitors capitalized on their chances from the free-throw line, converting on 13 of 17 while John Jay made just eight trips to the charity stripe.

Baruch held a 36-35 edge on the boards while both teams tallied 11 points off second chance opportunities.

The Bloodhounds will hit the road on Tuesday, January 24 as they will travel to York College for a 7:30 tipoff in Queens.
