Women's Basketball Posts 78-64 Wire-To-Wire Home Victory For Sixth Straight Victory

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team withstood a third-quarter outburst by the visiting Hunter College Hawks, 78-64, in posting their sixth straight victory. 

The Bloodhounds move to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while the Hawks fall to 10-10 on the season and 5-4 in league action. 

"Another great team effort, especially on the glass this afternoon," commented head coach Lynda Day. "Katie (Healy) produced one of her finest performances on the boards, which attributed to the win. We were pleased to see the effective ball movement in the second quarter, which allowed us to go into halftime with a sizeable lead," added Day. "We now turn our attention to Tuesday in a pivotal game against Brooklyn." 

Bobbi Green led all scorers on the afternoon, netting 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field. She grabbed six rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists in 33 minutes of play.

Kamryn Hammond scored 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field while converting 3 of 3 from the outside. The Poughkeepsie, NY native corralled seven rebounds while matching Green with a team-high five assists in just 27 minutes of action. 

Senior forward Katie Healy registered her 12th double-double of the season and 58th of her career, tallying 13 points on 6 of 11 shooting while collecting a game-high 18 rebounds in 37 minutes of play. 

Ashley Zeolla was the fourth Bloodhound to reach double-figures, chipping in 11 points, and six rebounds in 28 minutes. 

Alexa Charles and Kimberly Lau each finished with 16 points on a combined 14 of 28 shooting with Charles dishing out a team-high four assists and swiping three steals in her 35 minutes of play. 

Nia Chung was the third Hawk to reach double digits, netting 10 points on just 4 of 10 shooting but grabbed a team-leading 11 rebounds, seven on the offensive end in her 34 minutes. 

The Bloodhounds raced out to an early 14-3 lead as John Jay converted on 6 of their first seven shots while limiting Hunter to just a 1 of 8 start. 
 

Hunter responded with a run of their own, a 12-1 burst over a two-minute span, which tied the game at 15 following Charles' second three-pointer of the game. John Jay closed out the quarter with the final five points, taking a 20-15 lead. 
 

The Bloodhounds opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run, capped by a layup from Hammond after stealing the ball away from Lau. 

The two teams traded baskets over the next four minutes, with John Jay outscoring Hunter, 15-13 after Green converted a pair from the free-throw line with 3:07 left to go before halftime as the Bloodhounds led 41-28. The first half was capped by a 9-0 run by the home team as John Jay took a 50-28 halftime lead. 
 

Zeolla kickstarted the offense for the Bloodhounds to start the third quarter with a layup that pushed the lead to 52-28. 

Hunter began their comeback attempt, outscoring the Bloodhounds 32-14 for the remainder of the stanza, chipping a once 20-point deficit down to just six, 66-60, heading into the fourth quarter. 
 

A 6-0 run by the Bloodhounds commenced the fourth quarter as Healy converted on a layup that made it 72-60. 

John Jay preserved the 14-point victory scoring six of the final ten points as the Bloodhounds extended their win streak to six straight. 
 

John Jay shot an efficient 53.6 percent from the field and hit on 62.5 percent from three-point range. The Bloodhounds doubled up Hunter on the boards, 54-26, holding a 36-13 edge on the defensive end. 

The Bloodhounds will finish their season series with Brooklyn on Tuesday, January 31 with tipoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at The Doghouse.
