Women's Basketball's Six-Game Win Streak Halted By Brooklyn At Home On Tuesday

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team saw their season-high six-game win streak snapped at The Doghouse on Tuesday evening, falling to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, 74-57. 

With the setback, the Bloodhounds fall to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) while the Bulldogs remain perfect in league contests at 10-0 and run their overall record to 13-7. 

Prior to the start of the contest, senior forward Katie Healy was recognized for becoming the second Bloodhound in program history to amass 1,000 career rebounds. 

 

Three Bloodhounds reached double-figures on the night, led by Ashley Zeolla, who netted a team-leading 15 points on 6 of 13 shooting from the field in 28 minutes of action. Katie Healy netted 13 points while converting on 5 of 11 from the field in 35 minutes of play. Kamryn Hammond added 10 points in her 31 minutes. Zeolla, Healy, and Hammond each came within one rebound of a double-double, as the trio finished with nine rebounds. 
 
Gianna Gotti led all scorers with 38 points on 16 of 28 shooting while hitting 5 of 7 from three-point range in her 37 minutes. She also registered a team-leading eight steals and seven assists for the Bulldogs. Ericka James was the second player in double-digits for the visitors, netting 16 points on 5 of 16 shooting from the field while hitting on four three-pointers. 

Both teams struggled early on in the contest while the Bloodhounds claimed a 6-5 advantage following a Chayanne Kelly layup at the 3:47 mark. The Bulldogs closed out the first quarter on a 8-2 run that gave them a 13-8 led, as Nancy Pham capped the period off with a three-pointer. 

The visitors increased their lead, jumping out to a 35-17 lead after staging a 22-9 run that spanned over five minutes. The visitors connected on 9 of 12 shooting from while hitting three of their five chances from beyond-the-arc. John Jay was outscored 13-5 down the stretch of as the visitors entered the break with a 48-22 lead. 

The Bloodhounds started to trim away at the deficit, scoring 14 of the first 23 points in the stanza with Zeolla and Hammond combining for six points as John Jay trailed 57-36.  John Jay's defense stifled Brooklyn over the eight-minute stretch, holding the visitors to just 4 of 16 shooting and one three pointer made in seven chances before Gotti hit another triple from the left-wing. The Bloodhounds closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run with Ayanna Edwards and Healy netting four of the five points. 

John Jay carried that momentum into the start of the fourth quarter, as a 13-5 outburst by the Bloodhounds narrowed the gap to 65-49 as Tiffany Bogle muscled in two on a strong layup chance.Over the final 5:24, the Bulldogs scored nine of the 17 points, forcing four turnovers to snap John Jay's six-game win streak. 

For the game, the Bloodhounds shot 35.6 percent from the floor while only hitting on just 2 of 8 from the outside.John Jay held a 48-44 edge on the glass with both teams corralling 16 offensive rebounds. 
 
The Bloodhounds will be on the road on Friday, February 3, as they square off against CCNY at 5:00 p.m.
