Women's Volleyball Falls At Shenandoah Tri-Match On Saturday

Winchester, VA - The John Jay women's volleyball competed in their final tri-match of the 2023 regular season, as the Bloodhounds traveled down to Winchester, VA for a pair of first-time matches against Shenandoah and Penn State Harrisburg, falling by a 3-1 and 3-0 count. 
 
With today's results, the Bloodhounds fall to 16-6 on the season while the Hornets move to 7-15 on the season and PSU-Harrisburg improves to 9-12.

Meghan Smith recorded a double-double to lead the Bloodhounds against the Hornets, as she finished with 39 assists and a team-leading 16 digs. Smith continues to add to her career assist total, as she now stands at 1,811, needing just 189 to reach 2,000 for her career. 
 
Josanne Lewis registered a team-best 16 kills while added seven digs. Reilly Catan notched 14 kills and six digs. Taylor Hunt added 12 digs for the visitors. 
 
Regan Minney paced the Hornets with a double-double, finishing with a team-high 16 kills to go along with 14 digs. Natalie Reader led the team with 19 digs while Jillian Warter racked up 11 kills. 
 
Abby Lichtenfels added 21 assists while Kylie Danella produced 15 assists. Cheyenne Price tallied three service aces for the Hornets. 
 
First Set - The two teams traded points until the Hornets used a 7-3 run to build a 11-8 lead, thanks to an ace from Minney. John Jay responded with a 5-0 run of their in taking the lead, 13-11, on an attack error. The Bloodhounds held a 17-15 advantage thanks to a Lewis ace, but Shenandoah closed out the set on a 10-3 run of their own, securing the first point of the match. 
 
Second Set - The Bloodhounds rebounded and got off to a fast start in the second set, claiming an 8-5 lead. Two straight kills from Lewis gave the Bloodhounds a slim 15-14 lead, before the Hornets staged a 8-2 run, that increased their lead to 22-17, following an attack error. The Hornets held off the comeback attempt by the Bloodhounds, as an attack error by Lewis gave Shenandoah a 2-0 lead in the match. 
 
Third Set - John Jay raced out to a 6-2 lead in the third set as Smith and Paige Sadowitz combined for the block on Emma Thompson. The Bloodhounds kept the Hornets from completing their comeback attempt, as Shenandoah got to within two, 17-15, after an ace from Danella. 
 
Sadowitz killed off the attempt that made it 18-15. The home team rallied back in the set, as three kills from Minney and a kill from Warter made it 23-21 in favor of the John Jay. 
 
A service error followed by a kill from Hailey Waugaman from Ellmedina Hodzic gave the third set to the Bloodhounds, as they trailed 2-1. 
 
Fourth Set - Similar to the first two sets, both teams traded points before the Bloodhounds held a two-point lead on three occasions, the last coming following an attack error from Aaliyah Chunn that made it 18-16. 
 
The Hornets came swarming back on the heels of a 8-2 run, that made it 24-20 after a kill from Warter. Catan followed with a kill of her that kept the visitors in the match but an attack error by Lewis sealed the win for the Hornets. 
 
The Bloodhounds recorded 52 kills in the match and 73 digs. The Hornets notched 11 total blocks, eight coming from Chunn. 
 
John Jay 0, Penn State - Harrisburg 3
Kristin Gretener led the way with 14 digs and two aces for the Bloodhounds in the second match of the afternoon. Hunt and Lewis each finished with nine digs. 
 
Faith Harer led the way with six kills. Sadowitz had a team-high three blocks while Rylea Sandel had two. Smith recorded 16 assists in the match while Hodzic finished with six and Caroline Guerney added three assists. 
 
Julia Choe paced PSU-Harrisburg with 21 digs while Hannaha DeGregory added ten digs, ten assists and six aces. Camryn Wettstone and Amoi Willis led the team with six kills. Katie Richardson also had ten assists. 
 
First Set - PSU Harrisburg jumped out to a 8-4 lead before the Bloodhounds came back with a 5-0 response, capped by two straight kills from Catan, to make it 9-8 in favor of the Bloodhounds. 
 
A kill from Waugaman pushed John Jay's lead to 16-13 before PSU-Harrisburg responded back with four straight points, capped by an ace from DeGregory that made it 17-16. 
 
The Bloodhounds went ahead 19-17 but was quickly answered back by a 5-0 outburst by Penn State Harrisburg as the Lions went ahead 22-19. 
 
John Jay evened the match at 22 after a kill from Sadowitz and an attack error before retying the match at 24 thanks to a kill from Sandel. Henderson and Wettstone notched two straight kills to secure the set. 
 
Second Set - The Lions got off to a fast start in the second set, racing out to a 6-1 lead thanks to a kill from DeGregory from Richardson. 
 
John Jay trimmed into the lead as PSU had two straight attack errors. The Lions staged a 10-4 run that saw the lead elevate to 24-15 before capping the second set on a kill from Carolina Hernandez. 
 
Third Set - John Jay went up 5-2 following a ball handing error from Tinira Tubo. The Lions answered back with three straight point of their own to tie the set at 5-5. 
 
Following a kill from Waugaman, the Lions answered back with an 11-0 run that increased their lead to 16-7 as DeGregory posted her second consecutive ace. Harer ended the run with a kill. 
 
A 6-1 outburst from the Lions set up match point but John Jay continued to fight back with six points in response, capped by an attack error. Tubo killed off the rally and secured the match for the Lions. 
 
John Jay finished with 30 kills while PSU-Harrisburg recorded 11 aces, and nine blocks. 
 
Up Next - The Bloodhounds resume CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action on Tuesday, October 24, as they will travel to Baruch in a battle of the top teams in the league.
