Women's Volleyball Takes Hunter To The Wire But Drops CUNYAC Regular-Season Finale On Tuesday

New York, NY - In front of a boisterous and packed crowd at The Doghouse on Tuesday evening, the John Jay women's volleyball team took Hunter College to the limit, forcing a fifth set but the Bloodhounds were edged in the deciding set, 15-9, as John Jay fell in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) regular-season finale, 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-9). 
 
With the loss, the Bloodhounds currently sit in third place in the league standings at 16-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Hawks, however, clinched the regular-season title, as they improved to 20-8 on the season and finish the year a perfect 7-0. 
 
Today's outcome was John Jay's first home loss at the Doghouse this season, snapping an impressive nine-game home win streak. 
 
Josanne Lewis and Meghan Smith each produced double-doubles in the contest, with Lewis finishing with 15 kills and 19 digs. Smith served up a team-high 38 assists while adding 13 digs. 
 
Faith Harer led the way with 22 kills while adding six digs. Kristin Gretener tallied a team-leading 21 digs. 
 
Harer, Reilly Catan, Hailey Waugaman, and Paige Sadowitz added two block attempts each. 
 
Bethany Tomaneng and Tessa Winkleman produced double-doubles, with Tomaneng recording 45 assists and 22 digs while Winkleman finished with a team-high 22 kills and 13 digs in the victory. 
 
First Set - Hunter jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage, capped by Tomaneng's second ace of the set. The Bloodhounds chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to one, 14-13, on a block from Harer and Waugaman that forced an attack error by Pearl Mensah. The Hawks extended their lead to 20-17 before Lewis produced a kill that gave the possession back to John Jay. The Bloodhounds utilized a 7-3 run to close out the first set, as Simone McIntyre mishit the ball giving the set to the home team.
 
In the opening set, the Hawks held a 13-12 edge in kills while Hunter hit .300 to John Jay's .219.  
 
Second Set - Both teams traded points in the early portion of the set, with the biggest lead not surpassing three, as the Bloodhounds held a 13-10 lead following the service error from Winkleman. The Bloodhounds erupted on a 7-4 run that pushed their lead to 20-14 on a kill from Harer. The Hawks answered back by winning the set using an 11-1 to even the match at 1-1. 
 
Third Set - The third set opened in a carbon copy fashion to the second set, with both squads trading off points before Hunter jumped ahead, 15-12, on a kill from Winkleman. The Bloodhounds scored nine of the next 14 points in clinging on to a 21-20 lead. The Hawks outscored John Jay, 5-1, down the stretch, in taking a 2-1 lead in the overall match. 
 
Fourth Set- John Jay flipped the tempo to their favor in the fourth set, as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead with Taylor Hunt serving. The visitors made a slim comeback, 8-4, after an ace from Natalie Polanco. The Bloodhounds outscored Hunter, 13-10, in building a 22-14 lead. Following a pair of a substitutions, the two teams split the last six points, but an attack error sealed the set for John Jay, forcing a deciding fifth set in front of the home faithful. 
 
Fifth Set- The visitors staked claim to an early 3-1 lead before Hunter added to their lead, 8-6, on a kill from Tomaneng. 
 
Following both teams switching sides, John Jay got to within one, 9-8, but the Hawks didn't falter, finished the match on a 6-1 run of their own to preserve their undefeated CUNYAC seed and clinch the regular season title. 
 
John Jay, who will likely be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming tournament, will close out the regular season on Thursday, November 2, as they welcome Rutgers Newark to the Doghouse at 7:00 p.m.
