Women's Volleyball Earns Tenth Home Victory To Close Out Regular Season On Senior Night Against Rutgers Newark

New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team rallied back in the opening set against Rutgers-Newark and capitalized on that momentum in securing a 3-0 home triumph (26-24; 25-15; 25-18) on Thursday evening from The Doghouse.
 
With the victory, the Bloodhounds finished the regular season with 17-8 overall record while the Scarlet Raiders faltered to 9-16. 
 
Prior to the match, John Jay recognized their 2023 Senior Class - Taylor Hunt, Faith Harer and Aniko Ouwendijk
 
 
Harer registered a double-double, finishing the contest with a team-leading 17 kills while tying with Hunt with 11 digs. Josanne Lewis finished the contest with 15 kills while adding eight digs. 
 
Meghan Smith served up 26 assists and six digs. The Farmingville, NY native now stands at 1,945 career assists, needed just 55 to reach the 2,000 career assist club. Paige Sadowitz had three blocks in the contest. 
 
Kaiel Maynor paced the Scarlet Raiders with 11 kills and 12 digs. Angelyse Orellana finished with a team-high 18 assists in the contest. 
 
First Set - The visitors built a 10-5 advantage following a kill from Maynor that forced the Bloodhounds to call for time. From that point, John Jay became their ascent back in the back, outscoring Rutgers-Newark, 10-8, in cutting the deficit to three, 19-16, following an attack error. The Bloodhounds continued to mount their comeback, this time, using an 9-5 burst to take a 25-24 advantage before Harer served up an ace to complete the comeback. The Bloodhounds recorded 18 kills in the first set while the Scarlet Raiders had five service errors. 
 
Second Set - The two teams were in a stalemate at 6-6 until the Bloodhounds created some separation, staging an 11-3 run that gave the home team a 17-9 lead, thanks to a kill from Smith from Harer. John Jay recorded eight of the final 14 points in the set, as an attack error by Mia Espinoza gave the set to the Bloodhounds. John Jay notched 16 kills in the set while hitting .220. 
 
Third Set - John Jay came out in the third set with two aces from Ellmedina Hodzic surrounding a kill from Sadowitz to jump out to a 3-0 lead and shortly extended the run to 7-3, following a kill from Hannah Knox that made it 10-3 in favor of the Bloodhounds. Rutgers-Newark continued to fight their way back, as Maynor recorded four kills that saw the John Jay lead dwindle to 13-9 before another kill from Sadowitz gave possession back to the Bloodhounds. The two teams continued to go point for point, with the Espinoza coming in and killing the rally, that cut the lead down to five, 22-17. A service error gave serve back to John Jay and Hodzic sealed the win with an ace. 
 
John Jay will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Women's Volleyball Championship, and will host the No. 6 seed, the Lehman College Lightning on Tuesday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. from The Doghouse.
