Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | John Jay Athletic Communication

Men’s Basketball Remains Perfect at Home, Knocks Off Saint Elizabeth on Saturday

New York, NY - In the second ever meeting between the two sides, the John Jay (2-0, 0-0 CUNYAC) men's basketball team held off a late comeback rally by Saint Elizabeth Eagles (0-2, 0-0 United East) on Saturday afternoon. The Bloodhounds logged a 2-0 opening week of the season after scoring a win against Old Westbury on Nov. 8.

Saturday's contest paralleled the opener against Old Westbury at the start, as both teams were eager to get out and run in transition. The Bloodhound offense settled into the game in the second half thanks to timely three-point shooting from Garrison Watkins, Isaac Holmes and TJ Chisholm.

HOW IT HAPPENED...
  • Both squads came out with a frenetic pace in the first half, looking to take advantage of 24 total turnovers. The Eagles' Pierre Hardin and Jonathan Ramos dropped a pair of three-pointers to advance the Saint Elizabeth advantage and three consecutive buckets just minutes later had the Eagles up 19-11.
  • Adrian Kopec came off the bench to provide a spark and helped the Bloodhounds to a 6-0 run of their own, trailing just 19-22 with 9:36 remaining in the first half.
  • Transition play drew John Jay level as Isaac Holmes picked Ramos's pocket and dished to Elijah Holmes under the basket, tying the game at 24 with 7:08 on the clock.
  • Watkins made an instant impact returning from the bench in the final six minutes, floating one off the glass for the Bloodhounds' first lead of the game, 26-24.
  • Despite a lack of scoring in the final minutes of the opening stanza, Saint Elizabeth managed a quick 5-0 run in the last two minutes to negate the Bloodhound advantage and take a 31-28 lead with 1:09 remaining.
  • Jordan Evelyn answered back in the paint with 0:52 left to cut the Eagle lead to just one, and despite a Kopec chance for three in the last night nine seconds, the 31-30 deficit held to the final horn of the first half.
  • The two sides were inseparable in the opening 14 minutes of the second half, but the Bloodhounds three-point shooting was the difference in the final seven. After the Eagles cut the John Jay lead to 53-51 with 5:35 to play, Chisholm showed his value off the bench with another three pointer to extend the lead to five. Jamir Stewart splashed a shot from distance of his own with 3:19 remaining to give the Bloodhounds their largest lead of the second half, 54-61, in the final four minutes.
  • The hosts converted to a defensive set in the final two minutes after achieving a three-possession advantage and Isaac Holmes salted the game at the free throw line in the final five seconds.
  • Despite a Harden triple in the last second of regulation, John Jay moved to 2-0 on the season with a 70-68 win.
  • Watkins led all scorers with 18 points on 7-9 shooting, including hitting two of three shots from beyond the arc. He secured five rebounds and three steals.
  • Isaac Holmes with a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line, finishing with 11 points and a game-high 5 assists.
