Men's Basketball Suffers First Setback Of 2023-24; Falls On The Road At Western Connecticut On Tuesday

Danbury, CT - The John Jay men's basketball suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday evening, falling to the Western Connecticut State University Wolves, 87-53. 
 
With the setback, the Bloodhounds fall to 2-1 while the Wolves improve to 2-1 on the young season. 

Isaac Holmes was the lone John Jay player to score in double-figures, as he finished with 14 points in 25 minutes of action. Marquise Paulin and Christian Rosa each finished with eight points on a combined 5 of 9 shooting from the field while hitting on 4 of 6 from three-point range. 

Three West Conn players reached double-digits, led by Jaheim Young, who tallied a game-high 14 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the floor to go along with six rebounds in 21 minutes of play. Jourdan Belcher added 13 points in 13 minutes on a 5 of 8 shooting night from the field while corralling a team-leading seven rebounds. Justin Morety rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Wolves, contributing 12 points on a 5 of 9 clip in 17 minutes of play. 

Paulin opened the scoring for the visitors with a three-pointer that sparked a quick 5-0 run after Garrison Watkins converted on the layup. 

West Conn seized control of the momentum, staging a 19-0 run over the five minutes in taking a 19-5 advantage as the home team converted on 8 of 12 from the floor with Keeshawn Jones and Young combining for 10 of the 19 points during the spurt.The Wolves held the visitors to an 0 of 5 shooting display and 0 of 3 from three-point range. Holmes halted the run with a layup at the 13:08 mark. 
 
A 6-0 run by John Jay trimmed the deficit to eight, 19-11, after newly-minted CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Rookie of the Week, Daniel Reyes, powered in a layup off the feed from Isaac HolmesThe surge was quickly thwarted as Morety dialed one up from the outside that pushed West Conn's lead back to double-digits at 22-11. 

The Wolves outscored John Jay, 11-5, over the next 5:36 to increase their lead to 30-16 following a Belcher layup. The Bloodhounds regained their composure and rallied back in the contest, after outscoring the home team, 18-10, over the final 4:02 to trail by just six, 40-34. 

In the opening stanza, the Bloodhounds went a perfect 12 of 12 from the free-throw line. West Conn held a 23-19 advantage on the boards, which included a 10-3 edge on the offensive glass in the opening frame. 

The Wolves opened the second half on an 18-2 run to build a 58-36 advantage after hitting 7 of 13 from the floor over the eight-minute run. Holmes hit a three-pointer that was John Jay's first made field goals since Jordan Evelyn opened the scoring for the visitors at the 17:03 mark. The Wolves closed out the contest scoring 26 of the final 39 points in posting the win. 
 
John Jay was held to just 25.0 percent shooting from the field in the second half while the Wolves connected on 55.2 percent. For the game, the Bloodhounds hit on 30.4 percent from the field and from three-point range. The Wolves hit on 45.8 percent from the floor. 
 
John Jay will turn their attention to this weekend's Rose City Classic, hosted by FDU Florham as they, along with Pratt, Drew and the host FDU-Florham will compete this weekend. The Bloodhounds will take on Drew at 8:00 p.m. on Friday at FDU-Florham. The consolation game is set for Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Drew followed by the championship game at 6:00 p.m.
