Women's Basketball Secures Back-To-Back Home Victories; Outlasts Drew 58-49 On Wednesday Evening

New York, NY - For the fourth straight game, a trio of John Jay women's basketball players netted double-figures as the Bloodhounds secured back-to-back home triumphs, posting a 58-49 victory over the visiting Drew University Rangers on Wednesday evening from The Doghouse.

Chayanne Kelly paced John Jay (3-1) with her second straight 20-point performance, as the Harlem, NY native tallied 23 points on 9 of 19 shooting from the floor while hitting on 3 of 4 attempts from three-point range. She also added five rebounds, a team-high three steals and two assists in her 36 minutes of play.

Kamryn Hammond came within one rebound of her fourth consecutive double-double, as the graduate sharpshooter finished the contest matching her season-high in points with 15, nine rebounds and a season-high four helpers. Additionally, the Poughkeepsie, NY native was instrumental on the defensive end, swatting away two shots while added a steal in 34 minutes of play. Ayanna Edwards rounded out the trio's offensive production, as the Huntington Station native notched 10 points on an equally efficient 4 of 5 shooting in 33 minutes.

This marked the second time this season that this Bloodhound trio each netted double-figures as John Jay earned their first victory over Drew (1-3).

Drew (1-2) was paced by Miabella Diaz, who scored nine points on 3 of 6 shooting from the floor in 19 minutes of play. The Rangers duo of Sarah Smout and Jamie Struble were limited by the Bloodhounds' defense, finishing a collective 6 of 23 from the field. Smout went 1 of 7 from the outside as the pair netted eight and seven points each.
Coach's Corner | Head Coach Lynda Day:  "A slow start in the first quarter, but we were able to fine some momentum in the second quarter that helped establish a lead heading into the intermission. We need to do a better job limiting our turnovers and sticking to the things that we do well on the offensive end. We will take the win tonight, but, we have to focus in on cleaning things up on both ends in order to reach our potential by the start of conference play.
The Rangers netted the first points of the contest nearly three minutes into the quarter as both teams couldn't find their range from the floor. Gracie Hezel banked home the layup at the 7:58 before both teams endured a scoring drought. Edwards halted that scoreless streak with a layup of her own.

John Jay closed the first quarter on a 7-3 surge in taking an 11-7 lead following a layup from Zeolla, who finished with seven points and eight rebounds. The offense began to thrive for the Bloodhounds as Hammond served as the catalyst, opening the second quarter with a pair of triples that saw the lead swell to ten, 17-7, a minute into the frame. It was part of a larger 10-3 run by the home team as Zeolla powered in four points in the paints capping the outburst.

Amy Rachilla ended the run with three-pointer but was quickly answered by a trifecta from Kelly, making it a 24-13 advantage in favor of the Bloodhounds. John Jay closed out the first half scoring nine of the final 14 points in taking a 33-18 lead into the break.

The Bloodhounds shot 48.1 percent in the opening half, 60.0 percent just in the second quarter while holding Drew to just 25.0 percent shooting from the field and three-point range.

John Jay opened the second half with nine of the first 16 points as they built a 42-25 lead following a made free-throw from Hannah Ruberto at the 6:08 mark. Drew started to chip away at the deficit, as over a 4:31 stretch, they hit on 4 of 9 from the floor in outscoring the Bloodhounds, 12-9, as they trailed 51-37.

An 8-0 run by the Rangers commenced the fourth quarter and saw the once 20-point John Jay lead dwindle down to just six, 51-45, after Rachilla converted off the feed from Diaz with 6:43 to go. Edwards halted the run with a pair of made free-throws before the Bloodhounds netted seven of the final 11 points of the quarter in holding on to the nine-point triumph.

The Bloodhounds shot 42.3 percent from the field (22 of 52) while holding Drew to just 32.1 percent (18 of 56). John Jay hit on 6 of 12 from the outside while despite both teams converting 53.3 percent from the line.

Winners of two of three during their homestand, the Bloodhounds will hit the road and travel to Danbury, CT on Saturday, November 18, as they will take on Western Connecticut at 1:00 p.m.
