Men's Basketball Falls To Drew In Rose City Classic Opener

Will Face Pratt In Consolation Game on Saturday

Madison, NJ - The John Jay men's basketball team dropped the opening game of the 2023 Rose City Classic, hosted by FDU Florham, 112-79, to Drew on Friday evening. 
 
With the loss, the Bloodhounds (2-2) will square off against Pratt Institute in the consolation game at 4:00 p.m. at Drew University while the Drew will take on FDU Florham in the championship game. 
 
The Bloodhounds had four players in double-figures, led by Isaac Holmes, who finished with 16 points on an economic 6 of 9 shooting display from the field in 22 minutes of action. 
 
Newcomer Marquise Paulin and Adrian Kopec each had 13 points on a combine 10 of 19 shooting from the floor with Paulin grabbing five rebounds and three steals. Garrison Watkins rounded out the double-digit performances with 12. 
 
Six Rangers scored in double-digits led by James Anderson, who poured in a game-high 19 points on 6 of 10 shooting while connecting on 5 of 8 from three-point range. 
 
Andrew Turco added 16 points on a perfect 6 of 6 shooting while hitting 4 of 4 from long distance in his 20 minutes of work. Papie Robert had 15 points and four assists while Eli Yusavage netted 13 points in 13 minutes. 
 
Rounding out the scoring performances were Kevin Cronin and Josh Kline, each scoring 10 points on a combined 7 of 15 shooting from the floor with Cronin going 3 of 6 from the outside. 
 
The Bloodhounds jumped out to an 8-3 lead after Jordan Evelyn netted his fourth point of the contest off the Holmes assist. 
 
John Jay continued their run, using a 10-5 advantage to double up the lead at 16-8 following a floating jumper from Holmes at the 15:53 mark. 
 
Drew staged a 13-4 run in which they limited the Bloodhounds to one made basket in a three-minute span to take their first lead of the contest, 21-20, following a three-pointer from Yusavage. 
 
John Jay netted nine of the next 15 points over a 3:30 stretch that saw the Bloodhound retake the lead, 29-27, following a layup by CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Daniel Reyes
 
Over the final 8:16 in the first half, Drew seized the momentum, closing the half on a 29-11 run to build a 56-40 advantage despite Watkins scoring the final basket of the first half. 
 
During the run, the Rangers hit on 10 of 16 from the floor and 5 of 10 from the outside while holding John Jay to just a 4 of 11 shooting touch and causing six turnovers. 
 
Drew opened the second half on a 19-6 surge that propelled the lead 75-46 before Kopec converted on the layup to stop the run. 
 
The Bloodhounds were able to hit on their attempts despite the Rangers outscoring them, 37-31 over the remainder of the contest as Jamir Stewart served as the catalyst with seven points for the Bloodhounds over this time frame. 
 
For the game, both teams shot over 50.0 percent from the field (John Jay - 51.9% | Drew - 57.1%) but three-point shooting was a major factor, as the Bloodhounds hit 4 of their eight chances while the Rangers from their rhythm, hitting a 23 of 40 clip (57.5%). 
 
The game featured six lead changes and four ties while Drew held a 34-30 edge on the glass and 10-5 margin on the offensive boards.
