Men's Basketball Defeats Pratt Institute In Rose City Classic Consolation Game

Madison, NJ - The John Jay men's basketball team withstood an early five-point deficit from Pratt Institute and shifted that momentum into 24-9 run that gave the Bloodhounds a lead that they would hold on to, besting the Cannoneers, 82-69, in the consolation game of the Rose City Classic on Saturday afternoon. 
 
With the win, John Jay moves to 3-2 on the season while Pratt falls to 2-3. In the championship game, Drew defeated FDU-Florham, 90-65. 
Coach's Corner | Head Coach Ryan Hyland..."Overall, this weekend was a great experience for our group. We were able to see two very different styles of play, which helped us learn some valuable lessons that will ultimately aide us throughout the season. I'm proud of how resilient our guys were to finish the weekend on high note. We are coming together more and more each game and each of these early season tests shines more light on the team we can become come CUNYAC play. Next task, Homecoming. 
Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Isaac Holmes, who poured in a game-high 23 points in 33 minutes of play. Jamir Stewart contributed 16 points while going a perfect 8 of 8 from the line in 22 minutes of action. Jordan Evelyn rounded out the scored with 14 points off a 7 of 8 shooting display from the field while grabbing seven rebounds. 
 
Garrison Watkins corralled a game-best 11 rebounds, eight on the defensive end while Evelyn recorded two blocks. He, along with Marquise Paulin, and TJ Chisolm had two steals in the contest. 
 
Pratt also had three score in double-digits, led by Cameron Windt, who tallied a team-leading 17 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Jaden Young scored 14 points on 6 of 12 shooting while Justin Caver added 11 points. 
 
The Cannoneers jumped out to a 7-2 lead, capped by a three-pointer form Caver. The Bloodhounds began to chip away at the deficit, scoring eight straight points, capped by a Holmes three-pointer, giving John Jay their first lead of the contest at 10-7. 
 
In the midst of the larger 24-9 Bloodhound run, John Jay outscored Pratt, 16-9, capping off with Stewart layup that pushed the lead to 26-16 in favor of the Bloodhounds. 
 
Pratt narrowed the gap down to six, 34-28, on a fast break layup from Young, that forced John Jay to burn a timeout. 
 
John Jay closed out the first half on a 10-4 run, as the Bloodhounds took a 44-32 lead heading into the intermission. 
 
Nine minutes into the second half, Pratt found themselves trailing by just two possessions, 52-46, following Windt hitting a jumper at the 11:13 mark. 
 
John Jay outscored Pratt, 15-6, through the later portion of the stanza in building a 15-point lead, 67-52, after Paulin made the first of two at the free throw line. 
 
Pratt had one more surge left, getting the deficit into single digits with 2:18 showing on the clock as Windt converted on a three-pointer that made it 71-62 in favor of the Bloodhounds. 
 
Following a miss jumper in the paint by Watkins, Evelyn secured the offensive rebound and spotted Stewart who drilled a trifecta, increasing the lead back to double-digits, 74-62. 
 
John Jay shot 41.1 percent from the floor while Pratt hit on 43.4 percent. The Bloodhounds took advantage on their trips to the free throw line, hitting 18 of 22 (81.8%) while Pratt converted on 14 of 22 (63.6%). 
 
John Jay outmuscled Pratt, 51-30, on the boards, highlighted by 21-5 mark on the offensive glass. 
 
The game featured five ties and three lead changes as the Bloodhounds earned their tenth straight victory over Pratt, and stand 11-2 against the Cannoneers. 
 
John Jay returns to The Doghouse on Tuesday, November 21, as they will host St. Joseph's University - Long Island for Homecoming. 
 
Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. following the women's game, who will be hosting Mount Saint Vincent at 5:30 p.m.
