New York, NY - The Doghouse was packed out Tuesday for the final game for the John Jay men's basketball team before November holiday break.
The Bloodhounds welcomed St. Joseph's University Long Island into Manhattan as part of the John Jay homecoming festivities,
following a win by the Bloodhounds' women's basketball team over Mount Saint Vincent.
Despite a competitive first half by John Jay, the Golden Eagles' trio of top scorers proved to be too much down the stretch, taking the contest, 65-77.
QUICK HITS
- The Bloodhounds kept St. Joe's at arm's reach in the opening minutes with neither team maintaining more than a one possession lead in the first eight minutes. TJ Chislom and
Marquise Paulin dropped a pair of early three-pointers to keep pace with the Golden Eagles for a 17-17 score with 12 minutes to play in the first half.
-
Isaac Holmes and
Jordan Evelyn combined to give the Bloodhounds their largest lead of the first half, hitting jumpers on back-to-back possessions to put the home team up five, 22-17. Evelyn and
Garrison Watkins matched that lead with 7:20 remaining with a pair consecutive successful trips down the floor.
- St. Joe's notched their first lead since the opening seven minutes with 4:57 on the clock in the opening stanza on the back of a 6-0 run, powered in part by Spencer Malloy's game-high 14 first half points.
- Going down as many as four in the closing minutes of the first half, Watkins and Paulin pulled John Jay level with 37 seconds to play with four quick points. The Golden Eagles' Xavier Allen quick work under the basket gave the visitors the halftime advantage, 38-36, with the final field goal of the first half.
- The Bloodhounds headed to the locker room with five three-pointers to St. Joe's zero, keeping the deficit to just one possession.
- Coming out of the break, St. Joe's found success from behind the line. After going scoreless from three-point territory in the first half, the Golden Eagles hit three of four attempts in the final 20 minutes of regulation. The Bloodhounds managed just a pair of triples in the same span.
- Combined with their three-point surge, the Golden Eagles managed to hit 8 of 13 attempts from the charity stripe to meticulously build a lead in the second half.
- Watkins closed the deficit to as low as six points down the stretch with three straight points on his own but the Bloodhounds could not find the cup in the final minutes.
The Staten Island native finished with his first double-double of the season (15 pts, 12 reb) and posted season-high marks in blocks (4) and steals (3).
