Men's Basketball Opens 2023-24 Season With 82-63 Home Triumph Over Old Westbury

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team opened up their 2023-24 season in front of the home crowd at The Doghouse on Wednesday evening, outscoring the visiting Old Westbury Panthers, 55-38, in the second half in posting an 82-63 home victory. Tonight's season-opening triumph marked the first time since 2018 that the Bloodhounds won on opening night, when John Jay earned a 91-63 home victory over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts back on November 9.

Four Bloodhounds (1-0) finished in double-figures, led by Isaac Holmes, who netted a game-high 19 points on an efficient 7 of 14 shooting from the floor while pulling down eight rebounds in his 31 minutes of action.

Jordan Evelyn chipped in 16 points on a 6 of 9 shooting from the floor while distributing the ball en route to a team-high six assists. The Hempstead, NY native was active on both sides of the ball, adding three steals and one block in his 30 minutes of action. Garrison Watkins registered his 11th career double-double, as the Staten Island native contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds, eight of which coming on the defensive end. Jamir Stewart rounded out the double-figure scoring performances for John Jay, adding 11 points in 19 minutes of action.

Two Panthers (0-1) reached double-digits, led by Elijah Canady, who netted a team-leading 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field while hitting 4 of 8 from three-point range in his 26 minutes of work. Jordan Johnson-Rader was the second Old Westbury player to score in double-figures, as he finished with 13 points on a perfect 5 of 5 shooting display while also adding six rebounds.
Coach's Corner | Head Men's Basketball Coach Ryan Hyland
"Really excited for the win tonight. Couple of things we can do better but we are shaking the rust off and found a way to win. The crowd was unbelievable tonight and loud, as was our bench and it was an exciting way to kick off the season."
It was a slow start for both teams as John Jay went ahead 6-2 as Evelyn capped the run by completing the traditional three-point play from the free-throw line. Old Westbury staged an 8-2 run of their own over the next three minutes to take their first lead, 10-8, as Anthony Payamps converted on the layup.

Both teams were engulfed in a virtual stalemate, as the two traded points with the Bloodhounds outscoring Old Westbury, 12-10, over a near six-minute span to tie the game at 20-20 as Watkins made the front-end of a two shot foul.

John Jay closed out the first half of play scoring seven of the final 12 points in taking a 27-25 lead into the locker rooms. The Bloodhounds were held to just 23.5 percent in the opening half while misfiring on 11 attempts from three-point range. However, the home team capitalized on their chances from the line, hitting 11 of 18 in the opening stanza. The Panthers were a +4 on the boards (26-22) despite going 2 of 11 from long range.

The second started similar to how the first concluded, with both teams traded points over the first few moments, before the Bloodhounds created separation, using an 11-0 run over a two-minute stretch to take a 40-29 lead. John Jay was a perfect 4 of 4 from the field while creating three turnovers during the run.

Over the next six minutes, both teams started to find their rhythm from the floor, as John Jay outscored Old Westbury, 19-16, while hitting on 8 of 12 from the floor while the Panthers converted on 5 of 10. Evelyn's layup at the 7:59 mark increased the lead back to double-digits, 59-49. The Bloodhounds continued their scoring prowess, scoring 15 of the next 25 points over a five-minute period, extending their lead to 74-59, as Isaac Holmes converted off the feed from Evelyn.

John Jay preserved the win by closing out the game scoring eight of the final 12 points, as Evelyn scored the final bucket of the night for the Bloodhounds. The home team shot a blistering 67.7 percent from the floor (21 of 31) in the second half while hitting on 11 of 16 from the free throw line. The Bloodhounds held a 18-14 edge on the boards (13-8 on the defensive side).

For the game, John Jay turned 29 Old Westbury turnovers into 34 points. Both teams finished with 14 second-chance points while the Panthers' bench outscored the Bloodhounds' reserves, 31-24 while John Jay was effective in the paint, netting 48 of their 82 points inside the paint.

The Bloodhounds will close out their first homestand of the season on Saturday afternoon, November 11, as they welcome the Saint Elizabeth Eagles to the Doghouse for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
