Farmingdale, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team opened their 2023-24 season with a 73-58 road triumph at Farmingdale State on Wednesday evening.

With the victory, John Jay has now won their season opener in three straight years, the last two years coming against Farmingdale.

Coach's Corner | Head Coach Lynda Day:
"I am glad that we got the win this evening. We still need to improve in some areas as our expectations are set high, from practice one to game one to the entire year. We have a tough stretch in front of us this week. We will enjoy the win tonight but, tomorrow, we get back to work."

Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Ashley Zeolla, who tallied a game-high 19 points. The Yorktown Heights native converted on 9 of 14 from the floor while corralling six rebounds in her 24 minutes of play.

Cheyanne Kelly netted 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the floor in 29 minutes of work. Kamryn Hammond registered her first double-doouble of the season, notching 15 points and grabbing a team-leading ten rebounds in the victory.

Hannah Ruberto, playing in her first game as a member of the Bloodhounds, scored nine points while grabbing seven rebounds and rejecting four shots.

Layla Mendoza was the lone Ram to score in double-digits as she finished with 13 points in ten minutes of work.

John Jay jumped out to 5-0 lead as Hammond led off with a three followed by a layup from Long Island native, Ayanna Edwards. Farmingdale rallied back with five straight points before Hammond drilled her second three-pointer of the contest to make it 8-5.

The Rams closed out the quarter outscoring the Bloodhounds, 14-10, despite Kelly serving as the catalyst for the visitors, scoring six of the ten points during the run.

Farmingdale held a slim 21-18 advantage before John Jay seized control of the quarter, erupting on a 23-8 run that swelled the lead to 41-29. Zeolla and Hammond combined for 17 of the 23 points scored during the stretch.

Midway through the third quarter, the visitors continued to add to their lead, as Zeolla converted on the driving layup that pushed up the lead, 53-37.

Both teams hit seven points down the stretch with John Jay holding a 60-44, capped by Kelly hitting a step back jumper.

The fourth quarter mirrored the later part of the third before the Bloodhounds pulled away for the win.

The women's team gears up for their home opened on Saturdays, Nov. 11 as they will host Maine Maritime.
