Men's Basketball Stages Late Surge In CUNYAC Opener At Brooklyn; Falls To Bulldogs On Friday Evening

Brooklyn, NY -  The John Jay men's basketball team outscored the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, 15-12, over a 6:43 span in the second half but the Bulldogs scored four points down the stretch as the Bloodhounds dropped a 70-62 decision in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opener on Friday evening. 
 
With the result, the Bloodhounds fall to 3-5; 0-1 CUNYAC while the Bulldogs improve to 1-7; 1-0 CUNYAC. 
 
Two Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Jamir Stewart, who tallied a team-leading 20 points on 7 of 13 which also included a 4 of 6 marksmanships from three-point range. 
 
Garrison Watkins came within one rebound of a double-double, finishing the contest with 15 points and nine rebounds. 
 
Brooklyn had a well-balanced scoring attack, as six players finished in double-digits, led by Serge Thraysbule, who was one of two Bulldogs with a double-double, ending with 12 points and ten rebounds. 
 
Stephon McGill finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Gabriel Barker also netted 11 points for the home team.
 
Malik Dale, David McFadden, and Altin Kujak all added 10 points. Zuric Harvey pulled down nine rebounds. 
 
Both teams couldn't find their touch from the field in the early portion of the contest until McGill connected on a three-pointer for the Bulldogs, that sparked a 7-0 run before Adrian Kopec halted the spurt with a layup. 
 
Brooklyn staged a larger 15-4 run that saw their lead swell to 16-6 following a layup from Barker at the 11:19 mark. 
 
John Jay's resiliency was on full display over the next 5:21, erupting on a 17-6 run of their own in taking a 23-22 lead following a Stewart three-pointer with 5:45 left in the first half. 
 
During the run, the Bloodhounds shot 70.0 percent from the field while limiting Brooklyn to just 3 of7 shooting and forcing three turnovers. 
 
Brooklyn regained their momentum, closing out the first half outscoring the visitors, 12-9, but it was TJ Chisolm who netted home the final point of the frame, as John Jay trailed 34-32 at halftime. 
 
Both clubs shot over 40.0 percent in the opening half (JJC - 42.9% | BC - 41.2) but three-point and free-throw shooting were factors, as the Bloodhounds hit on a 25.0 percent from the outside and 54.5 percent from the line while the Bulldogs hit on 20.0 percent (3 of 15) from three-point range and 50.0 percent from the charity stripe (3 of 6). 
 
Daniel Reyes opened the scoring in the second half for the visitors with a crafty turnaround layup that evened the score at 34.
 
Both teams continued trading points over the next 7:31, with the home team holding a slight 16-13 during this time before Stewart hit a pair from the line that cut Brooklyn's lead to 50-47 at the 11:17 mark. 
 
John Jay continued to fight back in the game with Kopec hitting one of two from the line with five minutes left on the clock as Brooklyn held a 59-53 lead. 
 
Brooklyn withstood the relentless comeback attempt by John Jay, scoring 11 of the final 20 points as Kujak hit a pair from the line with 14 seconds that sealed the victory for Brooklyn. 
 
Both teams shot 38.2 percent from the field with the Bloodhounds tenacious three-point defense stifling Brooklyn, holding the Bulldogs to just 16.7 percent shooting (4 of 24). 
 
The Bulldogs held a 46-39 edge on the boards despite John Jay outmuscling them on the defensive glass, 29-26. 
 
The game featured 24 lead changes and 10 ties. 
 
John Jay continues their road trip on Tuesday, December 5, as they will head to New Paltz to tangle with New Paltz at 7:00 p.m.
