Five Bloodhounds Score In Double Digits As John Jay Defeats Brooklyn 73-59 At The Doghouse On Tuesday

New York, NY – Behind five players scoring in double-figures, the John Jay men's basketball team posted a 73-59 home triumph over the visiting Brooklyn College Bulldogs at The Doghouse on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 5-16 on the season while moving to 4-6 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while the Bulldogs drop to 3-17 and 1-9 in league contests.

"I am proud of the effort our guys displayed tonight, a game we need to have," commented head coach Ryan Hyland. "We structured a gameplan that we went to play through Dan (Kenny) early and we couldn't be happier with the way he showed up and produced," added Hyland.

Garrison Watkins led all John Jay scorers with 16 points on an efficient 7 of 11 shooting display from the field. The Staten Island, NY native came within one rebound of notching a double-double, as he finished with nine caroms. He also dished out three assists and a steal in his 36 minutes of play.

Dan Kenny registered his second double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points to go along with 10 caroms. The Suffern, NY converted on 7 of 14 from the field in 33 minutes of action while swatting away two shots as well.

Jayson Delgado reached double figures for the 13th time this season and the seventh time in his last contests, dropping 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the floor. The Floral Park, NY native filled up the stat sheet on the night, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out three helpers, recording two steals, and rejecting a shot in his 36 minutes.

Isaac Holmes dropped 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his 15 minutes of play while Jordan Evelyn rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Bloodhounds with 11 points, five of which came from the free-throw line. He dished out a team-high four helpers.

Kayin Olajide led all scorers with a game-high 20 points on 9 of 18 shooting from the field. He grabbed five rebounds and had two steals and an assist in his 37 minutes of play. David McFadden joined Olajide in double-figures, as he netted 15 points on 5 of 7 shooting while also bringing down five rebounds.

K
enny got the Bloodhounds off to a strong start with the first points of the contest before Brooklyn responded with a 7-0 run of their own following an Olajide layup. He continued to spearhead the Bloodhounds offense, as he kicked started a 22-9 run over the next 14 minutes that saw the John Jay lead grow to 24-16 as the run was capped by a Delgado layup following a rebound by Watkins at the 3:17 mark.

John Jay concluded the first with a 12-point advantage, 31-19, scoring seven of the final ten points over the last 2:20 as the teams went to the break. The stifling Bloodhounds defense allowed the Bulldogs to convert on just 21.9 percent from the field (7 of 32) while Brooklyn mustered to only hit 2 of 12 from the outside early on.

When play resumed for the second half, it was John Jay that came out hitting on all cylinders, converting on seven of their first nine shots in building a 48-30 advantage at the 13:20 mark, following an Adrian Kopec layup, that made it 48-30. Both teams traded baskets over the next eight minutes, with John Jay outscoring Brooklyn, 17-14, which saw the lead elevate to 65-44 following a made jumper by Watkins with 5:25 left to play. The Bulldogs were able to find their rhythm to close out the contest, wrapping up the game on a 15-8 run but John Jay built enough of a cushion to pick up the home victory.

For the game, John Jay shot an efficient 50.9 percent from the floor (29 of 57) and converted 12 of 18 from the line (66.7 percent). The Bloodhounds were aggressive on the boards, outmuscling their opponents 42-34 and 34-24 on the defensive end.

The Bloodhounds will make the trek to CCNY on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against the Beavers. "We are excited to now turn the page to Friday and get ready to face a really good CCNY team," Hyland said.
