Men's Volleyball Falls In CUNYAC Opener At Hunter On Thursday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team suffered their first CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) setback, falling to the Hunter College Hawks, 3-0 (21-25; 23-25; 19-25).
 
With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 4-3 overall while the Hawks move to 2-2 on the season as tonight was the conference lid-lifter for both programs.
 
Jack Nugent led the way for the visitors, finishing with a team-high seven kills. Logan Ramos added six kills and six digs. Kyle Barriffe-Johnson and Akashdeep Singh added four kills apiece. 
 
Alex Bridgelall concluded the match with 11 assists and a team-leading seven digs. 
 
Matisse Lee-Maarek paced the Hawks with nine kills and two aces. Gabe Mendoza added six kills while David Lou and Jimmy Chang had five kills. 
 
Cooper Moran notched a match-high 28 assists while Sergio Aguado recorded nine digs for Hunter.
 
The two teams opened up the conference tilt neck and neck in the early portion of the first set, as Ramos killed the rally to even the score at 6-6. 
 
Hunter jumped out to a 12-8 advantage on the strength of a 6-2 outburst as Hunter capped the run via an attack error. 
 
With the match within range, John Jay outscored Hunter, 8-7, narrowing the gap to 18-17 following a kill by Bridgelall. 
 
Hunter captured the first point of the overall match on Kill by Lou. 
 
In the second set, the Bloodhounds flipped the momentum in their favor, racing out to a 5-2 advantage following a service error by Ted Kim. 
 
The visitors held their largest lead of the set, seven, 17-10, when Mendoza was charged with a service error. 
 
Hunter used a 5-1 run to get back into the match, 18-15, following an attack error from Ramos. John Jay was able to adjust and go up six, 23-17, but the Hawks closed out the set on an 8-0 run in taking a 2-0 lead in the match. 
 
In the third set, John Jay responded to Hunter's early 5-2 lead, cutting the deficit to just one, 6-5, following a service error. 
 
The Hawks saw their lead increase to 17-12 on an ace by Lee-Maarek. Hunter closed out the match scoring 8 of the final 14 points for the first conference win of the season. 
 
The Bloodhounds will remain on the road as they will head to Quincy, MA for a tri-match in which John Jay will square off against Eastern Nazarene College at 11:00 AM followed by a 1:00 p.m match against Regis.
