Men's Basketball Comeback Attempt Halted On The Road At Lehman, 78-69, Despite Four Scoring In Double-Figures

Bronx, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team's comeback attempt fell short after trailing by single digits in the later stages of their road contest at Lehman, falling 78-69, on Wednesday evening. 

With the setback, the Bloodhounds fall to 5-18 and 4-8 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while the Lightning improve to 16-7 and 10-2 in league action. 

Garrison Watkins and Dan Kenny each notched a double-double on the night, as Watkins led all Bloodhounds with 21 points on 9 of 21 shooting while pulling down 13 rebounds in 37 minutes. Kenny posted 11 points on 5 of 7 shooting while corralling 11 rebounds in his 30 minutes of action. 

Jordan Evelyn netted 19 points on 5 of 9 shooting while converting 9 of 10 from the line in 32 minutes. He also grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists and swiped one steal. Jamir Stewart rounded out the scoring for John Jay, scoring 11 points while also grabbing six caroms and recording two steals in his 27 minutes of action. 

Isaiah Geathers and Mo Idrissou each reached the 20-point plateau with Geathers leading the way with a game-high 22 points on 9 of 17 shooting to go along with nine rebounds in 38 minutes. Idrissou netted 20 points on 6 of 10 shooting while hitting on 3 of 5 from three-point range as he added five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in 38 minutes. Jayden Stephens recorded 11 points in 15 minutes off-the-bench for the Lightning. 

With the score tied at 4-4, Lehman sparked a 17-9 run over the next 10:16 in taking a 21-11 lead following a made layup from Idrissou after getting the pass from Kai Parris before Corey Jones Jr. converted on a mid-range jumper to stop the run. Over the next six minutes, John Jay fired on all cylinders, outscoring the Lightning, 15-10, to cut the deficit down to five, 31-26, following a Kenny layup. 

Watkins was vital to the Bloodhounds run, converting 11 of the 15 points as John Jay went 7 of 11 during this span while limiting Lehman to just a 4 of 10 display from the floor. Idrissou drilled home a three-point as time was expiring as Lehman headed into the break with a 34-26 lead. 

Both teams struggled from the outside in the opening half, converting on a combined 3 of 23 from the outside. Lehman shot close to 40.0 percent from the field, however, converting 15 of 38 from the floor, while John Jay was limited to 35.5 percent (11 of 31) in the opening half. 

The Bloodhounds opened the second half netting eight of the first 13 points that trimmed the deficit down to 39-34 after Evelyn converted on the traditional three-point play. Lehman triggered an 11-5 outburst over the next four minutes in building a 50-39 advantage after Geathers finished the three-point play from the line at the 11:24 mark. 

The offense picked up down the stretch, as John Jay continued to trim away at the deficit, bringing the lead down to eight, 68-60, after Stewart hit from the outside with 3:30 showing on the clock. Free-throws proved to be a critical part of the comeback for the visitors, hitting on 9 of 11 from the line with Stewart and Evelyn teaming up for 13 of the 21 points. Lehman closed out the game scoring 10 of the final 19 points and holding off the relentless Bloodhounds for the nine-point win. 

For the game, John Jay shot 37.0 percent from the field while Lehman hit on 46.2 percent from the floor (30 of 65). The Bloodhounds was a +8 on the boards, outrebounding the Lightning 46-38 and 15-9 on the offensive glass. Lehman forced 18 John Jay turnovers, which led to 20 points off those mishaps. The Bloodhounds created 13 turnovers but only managed three points off those chances. 

John Jay will host their regular-season home finale on Saturday, February 11, as the Bloodhounds welcomes Medgar Evers on Senior Day.Tipoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. Before the start of the contest, the men's basketball team will recognize their seniors in a pre-game ceremony: Corey Jones Jr., Garrison Watkins, Joel Anthony Alleyne, Mikhail Leston, and Dan Kenny
