Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match On Saturday; Defeats Old Westbury For 12th Win Of The Season

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team split their tri-match on Saturday afternoon, falling in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play to Hunter, 3-0, before besting Old Westbury, 3-0. 
 
Match #1 - John Jay 0, Hunter 3
The Bloodhounds fell behind by three on two occassions before Kyle Barriffe-Johnson recorded the kill, making it 8-6.
 
Hunter seized control of the momentum, doubling up John Jay, 16-8, on an ace by Matissee Lee-Maarek. The Hawks scored nine of the 16 points in the set, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. 
 
The second set was a complete back and forth affair. Andrew Estiverne notched a kill, giving Hunter a 8-7 lead before the Bloodhounds rattled off six straight points, taking a 13-8, as Barriffe-Johnson served up those points while Logan Ramos recorded three kills. 
 
An 11-5 run by Hunter gave the visitors a 19-18 edge after Ted Kim recorded the ace. The Bloodhounds tied it 22 all following a hard-hit kill by Ramos. 
 
An attack error by Jack Nugent sealed the set for Hunter, as they went up 2-0. 
 
The Bloodhounds seized an early 6-4 lead thanks to a kill from Jeferson Avila. John Jay pushed the lead to 12-8 on another kill from Avila. 
 
Hunter staged an 8-0 run as the Hawks went ahead 16-12 thanks to a kill from Ted Kim. Nugent recorded a kill before the teams traded points. 
 
John Jay got to within two, 20-18, after an attack error Niro Osbourne. 
 
Hunter closed out the matched with a 5-2 run of their own, capped by a kill from Jimmy Chang. 
 
Ramos powered the Bloodhounds in the opening match, finishing with a season-high 16 kills and seven digs. Maxwell Law chipped in 27 assists while he and Avila posted five digs. 
 
Match #2 - John Jay 3, Old Westbury 0
With Law serving, the Bloodhounds went ahead 10-0 before a service error. 
 
John Jay closed out the set on a 8-1 run as Nugent recorded the ace to preserve the first set triumph. 
 
In the second set, Old Westbury jumped ahead 2-0 before the Bloodhounds came back to take a 4-2 lead. 
 
John Jay went on a 11-3 run, increasing their lead to 19-10 after Rudy Janga recorded the kill. 
 
The Bloodhounds finished the set on a 6-1 run, after Anthony Moyett was flagged for a ball handling error, giving John Jay the 25-14 win. 
 
In the third and final set, the Panthers held their own, trading points with the Bloodhounds before Janga recorded the kill, making it 6-5. 
 
Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo recorded an ace before Janga finished the match with a kill as the Bloodhounds collected their 12th win of the season. 
 
Janga concluded the match with a team-leading seven kills. Sebastian Rodriguez added six kills while Stephen Daly and Avila had five kills. 
 
Bryce Glasper recorded four kills and added four digs, which matched Rodriguez for the team lead. 
 
Thomas Albrecht led Old Westbury with four digs while Moyett added two kills and three digs. 
 
The Bloodhounds will travel to Lehman on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. first-serve.
