Men's Volleyball Splits Final Tri-Match Of 2023 Season; Earns Victory Over Host Bard

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team split their final tri-match of the season on Sunday, falling to SUNY Potsdam, 3-1, before defeating the host Bard, 3-1. 
 
The Bloodhounds move to 15-8 overall on the season following the outcome of Sunday's tri-matches. 
 
Match #1 - John Jay 1, SUNY Potsdam 3
 
Logan Ramos recorded a team-leading 29 digs to go along with 16 assists and six kills against Potsdam. Kyle Barriffe Johnson added a team-high nine kills while he and Steven Ajazi finished with two blocks. 
 
Tom Shemik led Potsdam with 17 digs while Duncan Tenhagen finished with 15 digs. Cooper Colesante notched 36 assists, eight digs, and a block. Joe Zimmerman added 19 kills. 
 
The Bloodhounds found themselves down 6-2 in the first set before a 5-0 run capped by a block by Barriffe-Johnson and Akashdeep Singh, gave John Jay a 7-6 lead. 
 
Jack Nugent recorded an ace that broke a 9-9 tie before the Bears scored the next five points, capped by an ace from Jason Hendler that gave SUNY Potsdam a 15-10 lead. 
 
The Bloodhounds cut the deficit down to 20-14 but the Bears closed out the set with five straight points to go ahead 1-0 in the overall match. 
 
Both teams traded points over the early stages of the second set before the Bears doubled up the Bloodhounds, 20-10, following an ace from Zimmerman. Zimmerman closed out the match with a block from him and Sean Murray, as SUNY Potsdam went ahead 2-0 in the overall match. 
 
For the third straight set, John Jay found themselves trailing before going up by three, 19-16, thanks to a from Barriffe-Johnson. SUNY Potsdam got to within one, 24-23, on an attack error but Stephen Daly closed out the set with an emphatic kill, as John Jay trailed 2-1 in the match. 
 
In the fourth set, both teams traded points early on, with Barriffe-Johnson tying the match at 6-6 following a kill. 
 
The Bears started to pull away with the match as Zimmerman recorded another kill to make 20-16. The Bloodhounds rallied back thanks to four attack errors, giving the visitors a 21-20 edge. 
 
Ramos killed the rally to tie the set at 24-24 but a kill from Tenhagen and an attack error gave the match to SUNY Potsdam, 26-24. 
 
Match #2 - John Jay 3, Bard 1
Stephen Daly led the way for the Bloodhounds with 11 digs and came within one kill of a double-double, finishing with nine. Alex Bridgelall notched 26 assists while adding six digs, and a team-high four aces. Ramos nearly notched a double-double for the second straight match, finishing with 11 kills and nine digs. 
 
Ty McGlynn, Angel Obergh, Georgi Chikolov each notched double-doubles for Bard, with McGlynn finishing with a team-high 16 kills and 14 digs while Obergh had 11 kills and 15 digs. Chikolov finished with 28 assists and 10 digs. 
 
John Jay jumped out to a 10-4 lead following a second straight attack error, which forced Bard to call for timeout. The Bloodhounds doubled up Bard, 18-9, following a kill from Bridgelall. 
 
Bard narrowed the gap to 24-16 with a kill from Obergh but Daly closed out the set with a kill of his own, giving John Jay a 1-0 lead. 
 
Bard flipped the momentum in the second set, as they took a 16-11 lead following a service error by the Bloodhounds. The Bloodhounds narrowed the gap, 18-16, after a ball handling error. 
 
The Raptors closed out the set with 5-1 run, thanks to three straight kills from Obergh., tying the match at 1-1. 
 
The third set started with both schools trading points, before the Bloodhounds went ahead 11-6 following an attack error. Jeferson Avila recorded an ace that made it 20-12 before Ramos recorded the kill from Carlos Llvicura that gave John Jay a 2-1 edge in the match. 
 
In the fourth set, Bard took a slim 7-6 lead on an attack error by Daly. With the set tied at 10-10, John Jay wound up outscoring Bard, 14-3, thanks to another ace from Avila, who also closed out the match with a kill. 
 
The Bloodhounds return home on Tuesday, March 28, as they will host Medgar Evers at 7:00 p.m. from The Doghouse.
