New York, NY – The John Jay men's volleyball stood toe-to-toe with the defending CUNYAC Men's Volleyball champions, the Baruch College Bearcats, as the Bloodhounds fell in three sets (25-22; 29-27; 25-22) on Thursday evening.
John Jay falls to 16-9 overall and 8-4 in the league while remaining in third-place in the conference standing. Baruch moves to 13-9 overall and 9-1 in league contests to still be in second in the league.
CUNYAC Men's Volleyball Player of the Week,
Logan Ramos, led the way for the Bloodhounds with 11 kills and registering 13 points on the nice.
Kyle Barriffe Johnson had six kills, two aces and a block while
Jeferson Avila added five kills, four digs.
Bryce Glasper notched the most digs for the visitors, posting six while
Alex Bridgelall record a team and match-leading 23 assists.
Andrew Ubanwa led the way for the Bearcats with ten kills while Haoxin Hu produced seven digs and eight kills. Defeng Han and Ryan Oommen had 19 and 17 assists, respectively.
John Jay rallied to score five straight points in taking a 6-4 lead following a kill from Avila. The two teams traded points until Baruch went up 17-15 after an attack error by Avila. The Bloodhounds continued to rally in the match, tying things at 17-17 following an attack error by Ubanwa..
Baruch outscored John Jay 7-5, down the stretch to take the first set following a bad set called on Glasper that put the Bearcats up 1-0 in the overall match.
The second set turned out to be a second back and forth affair. John Jay raced out to a 14-9 lead following an attack error from Jack Centeno. The lead stayed at six, 19-13, before Baruch rallied back in the set, using an 11-5 run to tie the set at 24.
The Bloodhounds fought to keep Baruch from sealing the set point, but a bad set by
Maxwell Law was the difference as the Bearcats claimed a 2-0 lead in the overall match and winning the set, 29-27.
Baruch raced out to a 7-5 lead in the third set, thanks to a kill from Hu. The Bloodhounds staged a 10-4 run of their own in taking a 15-11 lead after
Jack Nugent recorded his second kill during the span.
A kill from
Akashdeep Singh made it 20-13 in favor of the visitors, but for the second time in the match, Baruch rallied back, orchestrating a 12-2 run, that included match point following an attack error, as the Bearcats completed the win.
The final regular season road match for John Jay is set for Tuesday, April 4, as the Bloodhounds will travel to Jamaica, NY to tangle with York College at 6:00 p.m.
