Men's Volleyball Sees Season-High Five Match Win Streak Halted At Home Against Baruch On Thursday

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team suffered their first home defeat on Thursday while also seeing their season-high five-match win streak halted by Baruch, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-18) at The Doghouse. 
 
Jeferson Avila led the way for the Bloodhounds, recording five kills. Logan Ramos added a team-high nine digs while finishing with three kills. Jack Nugent concluded the match with two blocks while Alex Bridgelall posted ten assists, five digs, and a kill. 
 
Jack Centeno paced the Bearcats with 11 kills while he and Haoxin Hu tied for the team-lead with six digs. Defend Han notched eight kills, seven assists and five digs. Ryan Oommen registered 18 assists in the win for Baruch. 
 
The two teams traded points over the early portion of the set before the Bloodhounds rattled off four straight kills, three coming from Avila, forcing Baruch to call for time with John Jay leading 9-5. 
 
The visitors staged a 9-1 run to take a 14-10 lead following an attack error from Nugent. The Bloodhounds rebounded with a 7-3 outburst of their own to tie the set at 17 but a kill by Centeno gave Baruch the lead back. 
 
Baruch closed out the set on a 7-3 run, giving them a 1-0 advantage in the overall match after an attack error by Nugent. 
 
In the second set, the Bloodhounds jumped out to the early advantage, leading 5-2, thanks to an ace by Kyle Barriffe-Johnson. 
 
Similar to the first set, both teams traded back and forth points, with John Jay taking just a three-point edge, 16-13, on an attack error by Hu. 
 
Baruch answered back with a 6-0 run to go up 18-16 as John Jay called for time. Four straight errors kept the Bloodhounds within two, 20-18, but the visitors scored five of the final six points to go up 2-0 in the match. 
 
The third set was equally close, as John Jay trailed in the early moment before claiming a 8-7 lead thanks to service error from Higgins. 
 
Baruch started to pull away from John Jay, thanks to a 6-0 burst that saw the lead grow to 22-13 after an ace from Oommen. The Bloodhounds kept chipping away, scoring five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 24-18, but a kill by Centeno wrapped up the match in favor of Baruch. 
 
John Jay will be back on the court Tuesday, March 14, as they travel to Brooklyn College for a 6:00 p.m. first-serve.
