Women's Volleyball Off To Best Start In Program History, Sweeps Tri-Match With Victories Over Bay Path And Sarah Lawrence On Saturday

New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team continues their winning ways as the Bloodhounds earned a pair of wins during Saturday's tri-match against Bay Path and Sarah Lawrence. 
 
The Bloodhounds defeated Bay Path, 3-0 (25-8; 25-18; 25-20) and a 3-1 triumph (25-21; 25-10; 21-25; 25-17) over Sarah Lawrence. 
 
With today's home victories, John Jay improves to 8-2 on the season, their best 10-game record in program history, while remaining undefeated inside The Doghouse, running their record to 5-0. 
 

 
Bay Path dropped to 3-7 with their two setbacks while Sarah Lawrence earned a split on the day, moving their overall record to 5-4 on the season.

Reilly Catan led the way for the Bloodhounds with 14 kills and seven aces. Meghan Smith notched 28 assists while Josanne Lewis tallied a team-leading eight digs. 
 
Anastasiya Tsetsko paced the Wildcats with seven kills. Michelle Santiago had eight assists while Shanayah St. Phard posted nine digs for the visitors. 
 
First Set - It was all John Jay in the early portion of the match, jumping out to a 9-1 lead with Catan recording four kills during the outburst. 
 
Following a service error from the Wildcats, the Bloodhounds sparked an 11-2 run to take a 21-4 lead in the first set as a kill from Lewis compiled with an attack error from Lilly Kibbe gave the Bloodhounds the advantage. 
 
John Jay won the set on a service error from Tsetsko. 
 
Second Set - John Jay cruised to an early 5-1 lead before the Wildcats rallied with five straight points, capped by a service ace from McKenzie Labier that made it 6-5 in favor of the visitors.
 
Both teams continued to trade points as the Wildcats clung to a one-point lead, 16-15. Ellmedina Hodzic produced an ace for the Bloodhounds, kicking starting four consecutive points as the home team led 19-16. 
 
Bay Path continued to catch up in the match, trimming the lead down to five, 23-18, following a kill from Tsetsko. 
 
A service error from Labier followed by an attack error from Asja Kazic sealed the point for the Bloodhounds, 25-18, giving John Jay a 2-0 lead in the overall match, 
 
Third Set - Catan continued her strong start, posting three aces, that gave John Jay a 4-1 lead early in the set. 
 
Bay Path responded, outscoring John Jay 7-3 in taking a one-point lead, 8-7, after an attack error by Lewis. 
 
The Bloodhounds regained their composure, recording the next five points as Kristin Gretener served up three aces during the run and John Jay went up 12-8.
 
The visitors kept it close as they trailed 18-13 following another kill from Tsetsko. Down the stretch, the Bloodhounds produced eight of the final 14 points, clinching the match via an attack error from Tsetsko.

Josanne Lewis led the way for the Bloodhounds with 14 kills and eight digs. Faith Harer registered 12 kills and four digs. Newcomer Haily Waugaman set a new career-high, finishing with 11 kills and three digs. 
 
Kristin Gretener paced John Jay with a team-high 13 digs and matched a season-high with four aces. Meghan Smith notched 36 assists while Paige Sadowitz had two blocks and two aces in the victory. 
 
Athena Kazos recorded seven kills and added seven digs while added two blocks. Tabitha Hardin-Zollo led the Gryphons with 11 digs while Kaille Ferguson added eight digs. Claire O'Rourke recorded six digs while serving up four aces.
 
First Set Both teams traded points in the early part of the set, with John Jay doubling up the score, 4-2, following an attack error from Milly Guemple. 
 
With the set tied at 5-5, John Jay used a 7-3 run to go up 12-8 following a kill from Reilly Catan. The Gryphons responded with a 8-4 run of their own, trying the set at 16 following an attack error from Smith. 
 
The two teams continued to go back and forth in the match before Waugaman recorded a kill that made it 20-19 in favor of John Jay. 
 
The Bloodhounds recorded back-to-back points, as Lewis produced an emphatic kill from Smith and Gretener sealed the set with an ace.
 
Second Set - Sarah Lawrence jumped out to an early lead as Mia Rector gave the Gryphons the lead with an ace. John Jay responded with four straight points, two kills coming from Waugaman. 
 
Sarah Lawrence got back in the contest, but it was all Bloodhounds from there, as they produced a 15-1 outburst, pushing the lead to 20-5 after an attack error. 
 
Waugaman sealed the set for the Bloodhounds with another kill, as John Jay posted a 15-point triumph. 
 
Third Set - The Gryphons rallied back in the match, taking the third set, as they first jumped out to a 6-1, capped by a kill from Carolyn Kelly. 
 
With Sarah Lawrence up 17-10 following a service error by Ellmedina Hodzic, the Bloodhounds staged a comeback, rattling off four straight points, as Catan added an ace before John Jay forced an attack error from Kazos. 
 
John Jay continued to mount their comeback, as after trailing by five, 21-16, Harer had four straight kills to cut the deficit down to three, 23-20, before Catan added a kill that made it a two-point lead for Sarah Lawrence. 
 
Back-to-back hitting errors from the Bloodhounds gave the set to the Gryphons. 
 
Fourth Set - In the fourth set, John Jay raced out to an 8-2 lead as Sadowitz served two aces and a kill from Waugaman gave the home team a six-point lead. 
 
Sarah Lawrence continued to remain close in the contest, trailing 13-10 after an attack error from Harer. John Jay regained their composure, posting the next four points, capped by a Harer kill that extended the lead to seven, 17-10. 
 
Harer closed out the match with three straight kills as John Jay remained perfect inside the Doghouse. 
 
The Bloodhounds close out the month of September with a pair of road tilts, beginning on Wednesday, September 27, as they will head to Pratt Institute.
