Women's Volleyball Earns Five Set Victory Over Mount Saint Vincent

Riverdale, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team rallied back after dropping the first set, taking two before the College of Mount Saint Vincent evened the match at 2-2. The Bloodhounds raced out to a 5-2 advantage and closed the set on a 10-2 run in picking up the win on Wednesday evening. 
 

 
Faith Harer and Meghan Smith each posted double-doubles, with Harer leading the Bloodhounds with 19 kills and recording ten digs. Smith notched 36 assists while adding 11 digs. 
 
Kristin Gretener tallied a team-leading 18 digs while Reilly Catan added 12 digs. Newcomer Madison Reyes led the way with seven blocks for the Bloodhounds. 
 
Melanieann Broderick paced the Dolphins with ten kills. Dominique Otranto recorded a CMSV-high of seven blocks. 
 
Nicole Sullivan finished with 25 assists while Isabella Garcia and Adelina Elezaj concluded the match with 18 and 10 digs, respectively. 
 
The first set was evenly matched up until the Dolphins strung together five straight points in building a 14-10 lead. Mount Saint Vincent scored eight of the next 13 points in upping their advantage to 23-18 following a service error. 
 
The Bloodhounds trimmed the lead down to three, thanks to an ace by Gretener but the Dolphins closed out first set with back-to-back points to go up 1-0. 
 
John Jay raced out to 6-3 lead in the second set after a kill from Catan. The Bloodhounds staged a 9-3 outburst, running up their lead to 15-7 off a block from Harer and Reyes. The visitors closed out the second to even the match, scoring four of the final five points. 
 
The Dolphins established the tempo early in the third set, going up 6-3 thanks to a block from Otranto and Sullivan. 
 
John Jay used an 11-4 run of their to go up 14-10 as Aniko Ouwendijk and Reyes combined for the block. The Bloodhounds attack continued to be on display, closing out the third set on a 11-2 run in taking a 2-1 lead in the overall match. 
 
Both teams traded points in the early portion of the set until the Dolphins went on a 13-6 run of their own, taking a 18-11 lead before an attack error by Flores stopped the run. 
 
Mount Saint Vincent evened the match at 2-2 thanks to scoring seven of the final 12 points. 
 
In the fifth and deciding set, the Bloodhounds jumped out to a 5-2 lead thanks to an ace from Harer. The Dolphins scored the next four points to take a slim 6-5 lead before an attack started a 7-0 run from the visitors. 
 
John Jay closed out the match with a kill by newcomer Hailey Waugaman from Smith to record their first win of the season. 
 
The Bloodhounds gear up for their home opener on Friday, September 8 as they welcome Maritime College to The Doghouse.
