New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team opened up CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play with a pair of victories, defeating Medgar Evers and York on Saturday. With the wins, the Bloodhounds improved to 4-1 on the season while the Cougars dropped their season opener and the Cardinals fell to 0-2.
How It Happened - Medgar Evers
Set One | Taylor Hunt recorded all 25 points for the Bloodhounds in the opening set, recording 10 service aces as the Bloodhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
Set Two | The Cougars opened the second set with their first point of the match off an attack error. John Jay took control as
Ellmedina Hodzic recorded 15 service aces during the set before
Faith Harer wrapped up the point with a kill.
Set Three | The Bloodhounds carried the momentum into the third set, as
Joviana Bennett and
Malia Reyes opened with back-to-back kills.
Caroline Guerney produced eight service aces that propelled the Bloodhounds to their first conference win of the season.

- The Bloodhounds hit a blistering .559 (22 kills on 34 total attempts).
- Bennett paced John Jay with six kills and three digs.
- The 15 service aces from Hodzic, as of 9/9/23, are the most in the entire NCAA Division III for a three-set match.
- Hunt's ten aces, as of 9/9/23, are tied for second most with Ally Townsend of Springfield, who posted ten against Westfield State back on September 1.

How It Happened - York
Set One | The Bloodhounds trailed 1-0 following a service error before staging a 6-0 run to take a five-point lead following a service ace from Bennett. York cut into the lead with three straight points, capped by an attack error. The Cardinals kept pace, as Andrea Wright recorded an ace for, bringing the John Jay lead down to 8-6. The Bloodhounds closed out the set on a 17-1 run, in which
Reilly Catan had four aces.
Set Two | York jumped out to a 2-0 lead on two straight attack errors from the Bloodhounds. John Jay strung together 12 consecutive points, with Catan adding five more aces to her ledger.
Paige Sadowitz sealed as the Bloodhounds went ahead 2-0.
Set Three | It was all John Jay in the third set, racing out to a 16-3 lead after five aces from Bennett and one from Sadowitz. Hunt concluded the match with an ace as the Bloodhounds swept through the CUNYAC tri-match.
